  • Episode 528: Episode 277- Frank Barone- Going In Reverse To Move Forward
“If your principle is always to allow them to get better at their sport than sometimes we have to take a step back from what we find to be important.”

This episode of The Podcast is brought to you by Exxentric, the makers of the kBox and kPulley. Exxentric is the world leader in fly wheel training technology providing multiple pieces to fit your budget and needs to better serve your athletes. North American customers looking for more info should contact Andreas at [email protected] or 503-739-1391. All others, or to learn more about the kBox, kPulley and flywheel training, please go to their website at: https://exxentric.com/.

In this weeks episode of The Podcast I have the pleasure to sit down with Frank Barone to discuss the organization of the training process. After a run down of how he got up to Pittsburgh we get right into the process of building a team from scratch and some of the unique challenges associated with that. He then goes into the programming process and how he reverse engineers the game, while looking at similarities across different sports to help provide positive transfer to the sport. Frank shares with us some great insight on how he breaks down these movements, and how he looks at individual movements through a slightly different lens to help improve how we can structure our training weeks to better impact performance. We finish off discussing where we see our role change from the offseason to the in season, and where we both feel that performance coaches can do better to help the athletes and sport coaches. Frank puts out a lot of great content so make sure to give him a follow on instagram @coach_frankb.

  • Episode 528: My Thoughts Monday #177- Jay DeMayo- Your Focus Leads To Success or Failure
“The more you focus on things in a positive manner, the better chance you have of getting to them.”

This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance. Vald’s constant drive to help coaches find better information to drive more educated directions is second to none. Check out this weeks Metric Minute and make sure to go check out all their great products at: www.valdperformance.com

In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I reflect on the last book I read during this round of the 75 Hard Program, and that is Andy Frisella’s book on the program, 75 Hard. In his book he has a great Q and A section where he discusses different different ways people sabotage their ability to reach their goals. This has sparked a couple new thought processes for me when it comes to developing and progressing the programs for each individual athlete. This, HOPEFULLY, will increase “buy-in” for each athlete, thus improving the results of said training program.

  • Episode 527: Episode 276- Daniel Guzman- Meet The Athlete Where They Thrive
“You have to have patience to allow them (the athletes) to figure out what works best for them.”

“What are the things that can actually anchor me down in a time of complete uncertainty?”

“How are you going to be the best coach that you can be for your athletes? I don’t think that’s going to be on low sleep or being over worked because, like we said, our seasons are long.”

This episode of The Podcast is brought to you by Exxentric, the makers of the kBox and kPulley. This weeks episode of The Podcast I had the opportunity to sit down and catch up with Daniel Guzman and chat about flexibility in our programming and communication. After a quick run down of how he got back to LA we dive right into the unique challenges around physical preparation going into this off season. With the pandemic there are unique challenges to the athletes in their preparation with the restrictions that people are living under, which in some places is eliminating “pick up” and that could be a primary stimuli in their off season. We then discuss how the pandemic has taught us how to communicate better and forced us to reflect on our practice, and find better ways to get input from our athletes. We then discuss some aspects of the “off season” that we feel may be misinterpreted including goal setting, keeping the primary focus the focus, and autonomy/learning for the athlete. We finish off discussing the impact this has had on coaching health, and how it has made both of us find our “totems” to ground ourselves to find our “shut off” points to pause from work.
