  • Outside The Rack #34- Matt Thome
“Sometimes you need to slow down and go back and kind of reground yourself and say, ‘What is the most important thing we are doing? How can we accomplish that?’ Rather than, let me add this, and add that, and add this, and before you know it you have three different things that are kind of aimed for one goal.”

‘This puzzle is never ending, which is what makes this field great.”

What’s up everybody and welcome the 34th episode of Outside The Rack brought to you by Kinetic Performance the makers of Gymaware. In this show we are going to try to dive a little deeper into the minds of the top practitioners in the world of sport performance to learn a bit more about who they actually are and how they got to where they are at today. Today we are joined by ALTIS Performance and Innovation Manager, Matt Thome. Matt, thanks for being with us today?

Before we start, who is Matt Thome?

    Dad, husband, Phd. student.

    1) Describe a learning situation that brought about an epiphany in your career

When I was at Richmond, but I’ve seen over and over, and that is keep things simple and don’t forget about the essentials.

    2) If you could ask one questions and you know you would get the answer what would that be and why?

What’s the best way that we can create a collaborative performance team?

    3) What’s your escape?

For me it’s going on a hike, getting out side a bit.

We are hoping to provide the best possible content for strength coaches with each of our shows. If feel this could provide value for anyone else in the strength and conditioning field please feel free to share.

  • Episode 232- Felipe Eichenberger- Being an International Coach In The NBA
“Science is there, the numbers are there, it’s just knowing how to apply and when to apply”

This episode of The Podcast is brought to you by Exxentric, the makers of the kBox and kPulley. Exxentric is the world leader in fly wheel training technology providing multiple pieces to fit your budget and needs to better serve your athletes. North American customers looking for more info should contact Andreas at [email protected] or 503-739-1391. All others, or to learn more about the kBox, kPulley and flywheel training, please go to their website at: https://exxentric.com/.

Today I have the absolute pleasure of sitting down and discussing the road to becoming a strength and conditioning coach in the NBA with Felipe Eichenberger. He starts out the discussion sharing with us where he see’s the role of conditioning, monitoring, how they’re tied together, and how his time as a player helps him with building out these “workouts”. He then shares with us how he “buckets” the team, how this impacts training decisions, and what the goals are of each group. We then discuss the steps he had to take to get to the league and what advice he would give to young International coaches wanting to come to the states to practice. We finish off touching upon the importance of metrics in increasing buy-in and helping the athletes understand what they’re doing and how much they’re improving.

  • My Thoughts Monday #130- Lessons From Grey Beard, Don’t Be A Jerk
“In today’s day and age I don’t feel like you can be respected by kids if they don’t like you”

“If you’re going to be a jerk to people you better be exemplary, like out of this world at what you do, period, because people aren’t going to put up with it.”

“That’s the most overlooked thing in all of sports. Find you a crew that really wants to work for each other, and really likes each other, and really loves each other, and is willing to do whatever it takes even if that means stepping aside and doing less, or not arguing with someone over something because it’s really not what is most important at the present moment.”

This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance, the team behind the NordBord, ForceDecks, the GroinBar and HumanTrak. With all their products providing evidence-based solutions to performance professionals so they can get the right information, for the right decision, at the right time. Make sure to go check out all their great products at: www.valdperformance.com

In this little mini-series in My Thoughts Monday’s I’m going to put on my best Anthony Doskov hat and try to share some things with younger coaches. Lesson one is a simple one, don’t be a jerk. All to often there is this “tough guy” front that strength coaches seem to think they need to put up, but at the end of the day, is that helping you or holding you back?

We are hoping to provide the best possible content for strength coaches with each of our shows. If feel this could provide value for anyone else in the strength and conditioning field please feel free to share.

  • Episode 231- Andrew Cormier- An Experiment With Minimal Dose Training
“If you’re not training at the same intensity and effort level that you would with the sport you’re not going to get as much out of it.”

This episode of The Podcast is brought to you by Exxentric, the makers of the kBox and kPulley. Exxentric is the world leader in fly wheel training technology providing multiple pieces to fit your budget and needs to better serve your athletes. All others, or to learn more about the kBox, kPulley and flywheel training, please go to their website at: https://exxentric.com/.

We are joined by UMASS’s Andrew Cormier to discuss using a minimal dose. After a quick run down of how Andrew got up to Amherst, he dives right into what where the driving factors behind the training he set up for the softball team at UMASS. This includes teaching the athletes what “full effort” is, and how they plan out their training weeks. He then shares with us what improvements he saw by cutting the volume of the work and what the athlete’s subjective response was it. Next, he shares with us what he’s taken away from this experiment with cutting volume, and how he sees it impacting his programming in the future. We finish off discussing how this model will alter his in season training, how he has shifted his “focus” with the team, and what he thought he did really well and what he would improve upon.
