  • Outside The Rack #24- Megan Young
“Different sports require different capacities, mentally and physically.”

“If you need to reset and you’re seeking that more then once a month you need to change your environment.”

What’s up everybody and welcome the 24th episode of Outside The Rack brought to you by Kinetic Performance the makers of Gymaware. In this show we are going to try to dive a little deeper into the minds of the top practitioners in the world of sport performance to learn a bit more about who they actually are and how they got to where they are at today. Today we are joined by the High Performance Director with the Chicago Red Stars Megan Young. Megan, thanks for being with us.

Before we start, who is Megan Young?

    Megan Young is a connector.

    1) Describe a learning situation that brought about an epiphany in your career

Different growth points of who am I along the way, starting with football and basketball, but moving more towards soccer that taught her outward presentation doesn’t mean as much as communication.

Understanding who she was as a person and knowing that in and out, not being dependent of where she’s working and what she’s doing professionally.

    2) If you could ask one question and you know you would get the answer what would that be and why?

It would relate to partial physics because we are so close to understanding neutrinos and their effect on our actual aura.

    3) What’s your escape?

I have my “corner” where I start my day, but going out to Hawaii and unplugging.

We are hoping to provide the best possible content for strength coaches with each of our shows. If feel this could provide value for anyone else in the strength and conditioning field please feel free to share.

  • Episode 222- Ryan Gallop- Communication and Evaluations To Drive Higher Performance
“The team that can have higher energy and get around the pitch better is always going to win.”

“A lot of elite guys get to the elite level because of what they were born with.”

This episode of The Podcast is brought to you by Exxentric, the makers of the kBox and kPulley. Exxentric is the world leader in fly wheel training technology providing multiple pieces to fit your budget and needs to better serve your athletes. Today we are joined by Nokoa’s Ryan Gallop to discuss the training of Rugby athletes in a high performance model. Ryan starts out diving right into some of the issues and confusion around the views on, not just the sport, but some of the common training models he sees within Rugby. This leads him right into his model, where these ideas came from, and why there needs to be a distinct difference between training American Football and Rugby athletes. He then dives into how he sets up his programming along side the coaching staff, including how these conversations drive KPI’s that they use to make sure that the training is providing the results that the coaches and athletes are actually looking to achieve. He then discusses the role of the “fundamentals” of sprinting and cutting, and how important technique work is, even with athletes at the highest level. This includes a unique way that they plan on implementing a part whole approach to practice warm ups with a team he gets to work with. Make sure to check him out on Instagram @rg1nakoa, and @nakoaperformance for all they’re doing to help athletes get better, and check out www.rugbynation.com and nakoafit.com for more on those actual training programs he has been utilizing.

  • Outside The Rack #23- Nate Brookreson

“Sometimes the novelty of changing up who’s delivering the message can sometimes make it even more powerful.”

What’s up everybody and welcome the 23rd episode of Outside The Rack brought to you by Kinetic Performance the makers of Gymaware. In this show we are going to try to dive a little deeper into the minds of the top practitioners in the world of sport performance to learn a bit more about who they actually are and how they got to where they are at today. Today we are joined by the Assistant Athletics Director for Strength and Conditioning of Olympic Sports, Nate Brookreson. Nate, thanks for being with us.

Before we start, who is Nate Brookreson?

I would always say that I’m somebody who got lucky in this industry by aligning myself with great people.

    1) Describe a learning situation that brought about an epiphany in your career

Get good people around you and leverage their expertise to strengthen your process

    2) If you could ask one questions and you know you would get the answer what would that be and why?

Is what we are doing actually impacting performance and health of the athlete in their sport?

    3) What’s your escape?

On the back end of CVASPS we do some camping and fishing trips. Things that change the “pace of life.”

Today we have an awesome talk with DePaul’s Ryan Nosak on the return to play protocol that he has been working on. After a quick run down of how he got up to Chicago he gets right into thee motivation behind why this has become such a passion of his. He then shares with us what some of the resources that helped him get the ball rolling and how they built their “template” to help their athletes progress as best as possible. He then shares with us some of the evaluations he’s utilizing and where the “check points” are for each block for the athletes, and their impact on progressing the athlete. Ryan dives deep into not just exercise selection, but also the volume and intensity’s of how he programs in these phases, along with “goals” for the athlete to “hit” in those movements. This is a great 15000 foot view of the program that they have built at DePaul with a ton of take-a-ways and ways to better help set up your own protocols. Make sure to give @rnosak a follow on instagram to see more of what they’re doing at DePaul.
