  • Episode 209- Jake Tuura- What Am I Doing Now and What Can I Take Away
“How do we really relate to these athlete’s if we’re not trying to put ourselves in their shoes.”
“What is the point of using a term when there’s 30 different interpretations of the term?”
This episode of The Podcast is brought to you by Exxentric, the makers of the kBox and kPulley. Exxentric is the world leader in fly wheel training technology providing multiple pieces to fit your budget and needs to better serve your athletes. North American customers looking for more info should contact Andreas at [email protected] or 503-739-1391. All others, or to learn more about the kBox, kPulley and flywheel training, please go to their website at: https://exxentric.com/.
Today I have the absolute pleaser of sitting down and discussing training and programming principles with Jake Tuura. After a quick run down of how he got to YSU, Jake dives right into how a meeting with his soccer coach has really changed his view on training and driven him to some of the unique methods he implements. He then shares with us how these questions that coaches have asked him have led to some of the alterations he has made to his training programming. He then shares with us where the idea of using isometrics came from, and what he’s seen with improving biological outputs with his athletes. He then discusses where he sees the role of intensity of training, and some reasoning he sees to why low level stimulus leads to great adaptations with his athletes. We finish off discussing the role of training and the mental aspect of performance. Make sure to give him a follow at @jaketuura on IG and http://jackedathlete.com.

I’m using this week’s My Thoughts Monday to answer a question that I’ve been asked by multiple people who I hold in very high regard in relation to why I use myself as the video subject for our videos we are putting out to share what we do in training here, and not the athletes. This is just my personal opinion, and not an agenda I’m trying to push, but I do feel that these are things we need to think about as the landscape of college sports is changing.

  • My Thoughts Monday #107- Addressing What’s In Your Box
“You have to have the questions that you need, if you’re going to find out the questions that you don’t need, and that starts with addressing the situations that are right at your feet.”

This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance, the team behind the NordBord, ForceDecks, the GroinBar and HumanTrak. With all their products providing evidence-based solutions to performance professionals so they can get the right information, for the right decision, at the right time. This week’s My Thoughts Monday is based off a conversation with my director and a presentation we had at July’s edition of The Seminar. Although we need to look for greater ways to do things, and better questions that we need to ask so we can find better solutions to problems/issues we see/have in our work, there are a lot of things that are right in front of us that we need to address. We like to run to big ticket items and make massive additions to what we are doing without really addressing what is right in front of us. We like to talk about “low hanging fruit” but when there are situations that we need to address we tend to jump right past them and try to go way to the top of the tree.

We are hoping to provide the best possible content for strength coaches with each of our shows. If feel this could provide value for anyone else in the strength and conditioning field please feel free to share.

“You’re value has nothing attached to the badge that you wear on your shirt, but it’s how you are and what you do as a person that matters the most.”

What’s up everybody and welcome the 9th episode of Outside The Rack brought to you by Kinetic Performance the makers of Gymaware. In this show we are going to try to dive a little deeper into the minds of the top practitioners in the world of sport performance to learn a bit more about who they actually are and how they got to where they are at today. Today we are joined by Sportland Training and Fitness’s Sam Portland. Sam, thanks for being with us.

Before we start, who is Sam Portland?

He’s not really an academic, he’s a doer who grew up building things and playing sports.

    1) Describe a learning situation that brought about an epiphany in your career

Stepping away from one position and being let go from a second made him look deep into how he wanted to be as a coach and a person.

    2) If you could ask one questions and you know you would get the answer what would that be and why?

“I’d be asking the question of myself, is Sam Portland putting the right things in place to become the man he wants to be?"

    3) What’s your escape?

I like being out in nature to escape the noise, and competing because all you can do then is react.
