  • Outside The Rack #9- Sam Portland, Sportland Training and Fitness
“You’re value has nothing attached to the badge that you wear on your shirt, but it’s how you are and what you do as a person that matters the most.”
What’s up everybody and welcome the 9th episode of Outside The Rack brought to you by Kinetic Performance the makers of Gymaware. In this show we are going to try to dive a little deeper into the minds of the top practitioners in the world of sport performance to learn a bit more about who they actually are and how they got to where they are at today. Today we are joined by Sportland Training and Fitness’s Sam Portland. Sam, thanks for being with us.
Before we start, who is Sam Portland?
He’s not really an academic, he’s a doer who grew up building things and playing sports.
    1) Describe a learning situation that brought about an epiphany in your career
Stepping away from one position and being let go from a second made him look deep into how he wanted to be as a coach and a person.
    2) If you could ask one questions and you know you would get the answer what would that be and why?
“I’d be asking the question of myself, is Sam Portland putting the right things in place to become the man he wants to be?"
    3) What’s your escape?
I like being out in nature to escape the noise, and competing because all you can do then is react.
We are hoping to provide the best possible content for strength coaches with each of our shows. If feel this could provide value for anyone else in the strength and conditioning field please feel free to share.

  • Episode 207- Terrence Kennell- Life In Minor League Baseball
“You have to be able to adjust on the fly, always. You can’t be very rigid, in your thought process, or your system. If you’re very system based it’s gong to be hard to survive in Minor League Baseball because nothing is ever perfect.”

This episode of The Podcast is brought to you by Exxentric, the makers of the kBox and kPulley. Exxentric is the world leader in fly wheel training technology providing multiple pieces to fit your budget and needs to better serve your athletes. North American customers looking for more info should contact Andreas at [email protected] or 503-739-1391. All others, or to learn more about the kBox, kPulley and flywheel training, please go to their website at: https://exxentric.com/.

Today I have the absolute pleaser of sitting down and discussing the life of the minor league baseball strength coach with Terrence Kennell. After a brief intro, including how Young Terrance and I know each other, he gets right into the world of MiLB. TK shares with us what this life is like, the cultural impact of culture on the game, and the travel and its impact on nutrition and sleep. He then discusses the curve balls that they get thrown when it comes to training these athletes, including some interesting stories of some those “on your toes” moments. Terrence finishes out by sharing with us how working in MiLB has made him a better coach, and lessons we can all take from that experience. Make sure to give him a follow at @tkennellphysprep on IG and Twitter

  • My Thoughts Monday #104- Mind Your Metrics
“Let’s make sure that whatever we did through the day either helped us or didn’t help us, so that if it didn’t help us we now know we need to make changes to the training so that we can be best ready for what’s most important, and that is to go out and do our skill work with our team at practice.”

There is nothing cooler then DATA in today’s sports performance world, but we need to make sure that we understand what we are looking at. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I share why I think that HRV may be a bit overrated as a tool, and why we have made some additions to our daily readiness/trainability monitoring because of some issues I have with HRV.
