  • My Thoughts Monday #94- Jay DeMayo- Transfer of Training Is Not A Myth
“While you increase their ability to perform you perform, you then will decrease their likelihood of injury because you've put them in situations where they are going to be stressed similarly to not just practice, but competition.”
There has been an uptick in the number of people discussing the role of the weight room in athletic development of late. This is awesome because it’s driving some really good conversation, but also some really gross click bait when it comes to people putting out some content. In this weeks My Thought’s Monday I share with you some examples of people who are doing a great job of displaying this and how we can use what they’re doing as a driver to how we can be better in our programming, progressions, and outcomes associated with each.
We are hoping to provide the best possible content for strength coaches with each of our shows. If feel this could provide value for anyone else in the strength and conditioning field please feel free to share.

“More people will research their next refrigerator, their next house, their next purchase, their next care, more than they research their health.’

    “Mindset drives decisions”

A few weeks ago I was challenged to push myself past my limits with training for the first time in a long time. This really resparked my “love” for training, and got me thinking about why I got into this. This weeks My Thoughts Monday is a discussion about why I got into this, and why challenging ourselves in training from time to time may be what we all need to help keep that “spark” that got the fire started.

Today I get the pleasure of sitting down and discussing in season training in the National Hockey League with the San Jose Sharks Mike Potenza. After a quick rundown of how he got to the league and the Sharks we start diving right into the evolution of his in season training program. Mike has evolved it to a year long developmental model, and he shares how this program evolved and with what their focuses are and how he structures his training blocks. Next, Mike discusses how they evaluate the athletes, how often they evaluate them, and who gets access to the information to make sure the athletes are moving the the right direction. This leads him into how the warm up he uses with his guys is the backbone of all of their training where they check a lot of boxes to make sure the guys are best prepped and take care of. With all the travel in the western conference, Mike then discusses what’s involved in making sure the guys are good to go with all the travel and issues usually associated with it. Mike finishes off by sharing with us where the most important parts of nutrition and recovery he sees with todays athletes.
