Today I get the pleasure of sitting down and discussing in season training in the National Hockey League with the San Jose Sharks Mike Potenza. After a quick rundown of how he got to the league and the Sharks we start diving right into the evolution of his in season training program. Mike has evolved it to a year long developmental model, and he shares how this program evolved and with what their focuses are and how he structures his training blocks. Next, Mike discusses how they evaluate the athletes, how often they evaluate them, and who gets access to the information to make sure the athletes are moving the the right direction. This leads him into how the warm up he uses with his guys is the backbone of all of their training where they check a lot of boxes to make sure the guys are best prepped and take care of. With all the travel in the western conference, Mike then discusses what’s involved in making sure the guys are good to go with all the travel and issues usually associated with it. Mike finishes off by sharing with us where the most important parts of nutrition and recovery he sees with todays athletes.

Coppin State’s Chris Hays joins us this week to piggy back off of Episode #89 with his views of our impact as a profession on the outcomes of competition. At the present we, as a profession as a whole, deflect the blame when we are not successful to things like recruiting, instead of, where Chris see’s us going, taking on more responsibilities to make sure that we help drive better results.

The role of the strength and conditioning coach is something that has been a bit of an unknown for quite some time. In this week My Thoughts Monday I discuss a bit of the history of our vocation and where I’ve seen some curves and turns away from where the initial reason for training came from in the first place, to improve performance.
