Episode 11 brings us to new depths of expertise, let’s just be clear about this from the outset. I can’t contain my excitement. It’s Roger Horrocks, Roger Horrocks joined me on the show to talk about filming Blue Planet, one of the most visually spectacular things i’ve ever seen on television. I’ve never seen behind the scenes that was as interesting if not in some cases more interesting than the show at times. The lengths that this team goes to in order to get the shot are remarkable to say the very least. Weeks and months at sea in order to get minutes of footage. Of course it’s not a task single handedly taken on by Mr Horrocks, he’s part of a fantastic team of natural history filmmakers that combined have turned around some of the best work in existence on the subject. He talks about his experience of working with what I can safely say would be the most qualified mentor in underwater exploration, Didier Noirot. Who worked with none other than Jacques Cousteau. So it’s really of no surprise to see the level that Roger attains considering that pedigree. I forgot to ask him what it was like to have his footage narrated by David Attenborough so you’ll just have to ask him yourself. He managed to squeeze us in amidst being constantly out at sea so I’m incredibly grateful to be able to bring you guys this week's episode. Although i’ve dropped myself in it by saying that i’ll join him in the water sometime and I can barely swim. 

Episode 10 of Still Rolling delves deeper into the opportunities that present themselves in the film industry. Getting into the film industry for many is seen as a pain in the arse or something beyond their capabilities, I went through this mind game myself. I’ve got to be good enough to make an impression but i’ve got to learn to get good, so where do I start? Fortunately there’s a lot of help if you know where to look. One such organisation is the Mark Milsome foundation, set up in the memory of the late camera operator who was tragically killed on a film set in 2017. The organisations pledge is to support opportunities within the industry by bringing scholarships into place that support candidates throughout their entire industry journey. So I asked one of the (scholars/mentees) to join me on the show. Daisy has been lucky enough to get on the set of the latest Bond Movie ‘No Time to Die’ and Guy Ritchie's latest outing ‘Cash Truck’. I wanted to find out how the foundation has been supporting her and how she even got involved in the first place. I know what my experience has been like carving a path into the industry but that was some time ago, I’m definitely out of touch with the current landscape for people starting out. Hopefully things are changing for the better in terms of awareness of opportunities. So if you’re a camera operator or director of photography in the making or you just want to find out more then tune in.

We’re lucky enough to welcome Anna Stylińska on to the Still Rolling show in Episode 9. An up and coming producer from Poland she’s most recently been championing the film in discussion today. Lessons On Love is a feature length documentary featuring the incredibly charming Jola. The film itself is very unique in its mix of styles and it captures Jola on her journey to rediscover life after getting sick of her abusive husband. This brings with it fantastic scenes, dancing lessons, singing lessons and inhaling helium in the park with her new boyfriend. All at the age of 69. The contrast of Jola’s potty mouth and her timeless sense of style has you rooting for this old dear throughout the film. The film itself was co-produced with HBO Europe and is currently embarking on the festival circuit. With the festival circuit being such a pivotal part of a documentary’s distribution we discuss the implications of Covid on getting eyes on the film in a situation where you can’t publicly screen. Thankfully the global crisis hasn’t slowed down the momentum of the film as it picks up invites to some of the biggest documentary festivals in the world. 

Anna Stylińska is a documentary filmmaker and independent producer. Graduated from Cinema Studies (University Paris X), Creative Producer’s Course (Wajda School), photography and philosophy. Gathered experience in different areas of cinema production as a production manager, co-director, first AD, screenwriter and manager at a film festival. She was responsible for the promotion of Polish cinema abroad in the Adam Mickiewicz Institute (under the Ministry of Culture). For many years organized cinema workshops for disadvantaged youth. Assisted Pawel Lozinski on: "You have no idea how much I love you”. Currently working on her feature debut "Lessons of love", a co-production with HBO and running Widok Foundation which organizes workshops for filmmakers and produces creative documentaries.

Episode 8 is about all things FPV drone or I presume First Person View drone. For those of you that have been under a rock shaped like a barrier to new technology, FPV drone flying is becoming a big deal. For the most part the shots you can achieve are mind blowing, the speed in which you can control the camera into close proximity lends a perspective otherwise impossible to achieve. Over the last few years the technology has become increasingly more accessible and that means that a new generation of pilots with skills in cinematography are taking to the skies to show off. They’re hassling extreme sports athletes the world over in order to hone their skills and get as close as they can to the action. Joining us on the show is Louis Houiller, his skills speak for themselves in a pursuit still very much in its infancy. He’s a pilot himself, he builds FPV drones and is prepared to answer all of our questions about getting into it. Louis is also kind enough to break down the complexities of the controls so that I can have a go, I told him if I crash that I’d buy him a new one, but he builds them so hopefully he’ll let me off the hook.  

Louis Houiller is another unsung hero of the media world, he’s been honing his skills in secrecy and the results are spectacular. He frequents abandoned power plants, picturesque landscapes all in the pursuit of becoming a formidable force in the FPV drone world. Louis’s love for travel has him seeking out some incredible shots and as a result his show reel is mesmerising. His mini drone with a camera strapped to it capturing skier’s doing backflips merely inches from the tips of their skis, navigating tight spots in Scottish ruins and skimming the ocean in Iceland are just a few of the highlights. 

Episode seven of Still Rolling takes a nasty turn this week as we actually try and do something responsible. I know, why on earth would anyone try and do that?

Well, hear us out, mainly because Jax Harney from Envy Post Production was kind enough to join us this week. This is a great honour for many reasons but for the most part she lends us her perspective on being a colourist. Jax has firmly established herself as an invaluable member of the team at Envy for her incredible attention to detail and unmistakable style. Josh Allen tries to get technical as he picks her brains for you to find out what kind of technical demands a colourist considers and what are the most important things you need to think of before handing your footage over to a colourist to make sure you get the best result. Turns out that simply nailing your exposure is a great place to start, who knew. We hear about some of Jax’s favourite projects and she lets us know why she hates iPhone footage (sometimes). Colour is a subject close to our hearts and this episode gives a candid look at someone at the top of the game in the London industry.

Jax also gives us a starter pack on what you might need to get into working as a colourist and some great places to start looking for training if you’re serious. She’s just generally awesome like that.

Jax had an unconventional start in the industry, beginning her studies in the world of ceramics and then discovering a talent for photography. Fast forward and she quickly found that talent and love was actually suited incredibly well to retouching. Detail and colour provided the focus for her incredible attention to detail. Now she’s a senior colourist at Envy Advertising, one of the top shops for post production in the country, if not the top. Jax works in predominantly short form advertising spots that require time to develop a style and a look that otherwise might not get the attention it deserves in a project with a longer duration. Spending hours perfecting shots that might only make up a 30 second television commercial. There’s no disputing that she’s amongst the top colourists in the country. 

Episode six of Still Rolling gets back to the creators, this week Josh welcomes Dan Joyce. Mr Joyce, well where do you start? This guy has done things that humans shouldn’t be subjected to, the worst part is that he volunteered himself. Our interest lies in how on earth a show like Dirty Sanchez even got commissioned, we won’t dwell on the stunts, we don’t want to trigger a PTSD episode and that’s just our concerns for Josh. In much more pleasant news in recent years Dan Joyce has been going from strength to strength in establishing himself behind the camera. So we’ll talk to him about his inspirations and how he conducts himself behind the camera to get the results that he does. Finding the creativity in the things that most people would overlook. Dan Joyce has a style all his own, Josh also talks to him about the state of creative education as more and more parents are coming to terms with delivering education from home. We think he’s got it figured out as his little girl Margot was presented with her Blast Skates ‘My First Skateboard Kit’ a few months ago.

Dan Buck Joyce or as you may have heard of him, Dan Joyce has a long standing history in front of and behind the camera. Finding his five minutes as one of the cast members of MTV’s Dirty Sanchez he then went on to point cameras at whatever things piqued his interests. From skateboarding to race cars, Dan’s style was always present. With a look clearly influenced by skate culture, from the board designs in the late 80s to the very first skate films themselves. His charm is in his ‘do what you can with what you’ve got’ attitude that definitely sets him apart. Dan’s ability to create something with tools that others wouldn’t know what to do with is a sight to behold. 

Episode five of Still Rolling continues our theme of guests that have different parts to play in the film industry. Many people make up the crew on a film set and without each and every one of them the movies you enjoy would look very different. Prop storeman Danny Winship is no exception, bringing his insight from movies such as Aladdin and King Arthur, we get to know how on earth he found himself in the role. We also get Danny’s take on the premise of returning to work and how his life has been affected by the global events impacting the industry. Josh confronts Danny about borrowing things from the set as new regular feature ‘On Set Confessions’ returns, we’ll see if Danny has anything to disclose that doesn’t prevent him from going back to work when the lockdown is lifted.

Danny Winship is a critical part of the movie making machine, one of the many unsung heroes of the film industry. You’ll find his name way down on the credits but that doesn’t mean he’s any less important. His unique outlook on life and willingness to put himself in the way of opportunity have landed him on the sets of countless feature films. In a relatively short period of time Danny went from working on Edge of tomorrow to most recently working on Aladdin, Guy Ritchie's live action outing for Disney. When he’s back to work he’ll be on set for Netflix’s The Nevers.

In episode four of Still Rolling, host Josh Allen welcomes old friend Andy Harriss; a man that has been responsible for keeping anyone who is anyone in the film industry safe. 

He’s most recently worked on James Bond ‘No Time To Die’ but his credits span everything from Rush to Mission Impossible. Andy is the man responsible for making sure Tom Cruise didn’t get turned into a pizza on the runway below when the director decided it would be a good idea to let him hang off a plane. 

Of course we’re only going to talk about the sketchiest stuff he’s ever done and got away with so you’re really in for a treat this week. 

Andy’s background in the military and emergency services made him the perfect candidate to embark on a venture into health and safety. That’s putting it very lightly though. 

A new term should be created for what Andy has achieved on set because the scale of operations that he commands the world over is unrivaled. From Hollywood stunts to BBC’s Top gear the things this man has witnessed put the Guiness Book of world records to shame. He has the final say so when a director wants to send Tom Cruise through a burning building or decides to fly his own helicopter. 

A keen motorsport fan he doesn’t just sit on the sidelines, his crew are the ones airlifting the drivers and putting out the fires. Andy has travelled the entire globe and tackled everything the elements have to throw at him.

Episode three of Still Rolling features our resident host Josh Allen and welcomes guest Casey Hennessy on to the show. A young female filmmaker in the midst of her career, she shares with us a bit about her journey in filmmaking up to now and how her work in commercial filmmaking translates to her narrative aspirations. Josh also premieres his new pop quiz to help the audience get to know the guests.

Casey is a Midlands-born commercial director working across automotive, sport and lifestyle. She has worked with global brands including BMW, Mini, Microsoft, Renault F1, W Series and Jaguar Land Rover.Alongside commercials, Casey writes and directs her own narrative work, with her current short film in development with the BFI and Freya Films.Casey, started out her career in filmmaking by making shit skate films with her mates, in her own words. Before deviating slightly towards an education in graphic design. Her short film Snail garnered an award at the Earls Court film festival and made official selection in Bath and Carmarthen. We’re led to believe she aspires to be the next Spike Jonze. This is however unconfirmed. We do know that she champions women in racing, she recently directed a film for the Women's Racing Series featuring a whole host of nutters like ‘The Grand Tours’ Abbie Eaton.

Continuing the Still Rolling series, for the second episode, Josh Allen welcomes special guest Stephane Benini; multi award winning documentary, commercial and music video filmmaker.

We’ll be getting into Josh’s back story a bit more this week as we explore his early inspiration and some of the moments when things started taking shape for him. Stephane has played a pivotal part in Josh’s career. He just didn’t know it right away. Since then the pair have worked together on projects that have taken them on road trips to the Sahara desert and culminated in them taking over Orly airport in Paris.
