  • Episode 252 - Microsoft Exchange Hack and advice for Threat Hunting - MySecTV Takeaway
Following Microsoft’s news about Hafnium, the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) advises organisations using Microsoft Exchange to urgently patch the following Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs):
CVE-2021-26855 – server-side request forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in Exchange.CVE-2021-26857 – insecure deserialization vulnerability in the Unified Messaging service.CVE-2021-26858 – post-authentication arbitrary file write vulnerability in Exchange.CVE-2021-27065 – post-authentication arbitrary file write vulnerability in Exchange. If successfully exploited, these CVEs would allow an unauthenticated attacker to write files and execute code with elevated privileges on the underlying Microsoft Windows operating system.
A large number of Australian organisations are yet to patch vulnerable versions of Microsoft Exchange, leaving them vulnerable to compromise. The ACSC is encouraging these organisations to do so urgently.
We cross to the US and speak with Mat Gangwer, Senior Director, Sophos Managed Threat Response and review the Microsoft Exchange hack and threat hunting advice.

  • Episode 249 - The Big Biz of Cryptocrime - Pandemic year of 2020
Kim Grauer is the Head of Research at Chainalysis, where she examines trends in cryptocurrency economics and crime.  Using Chainalysis data and software, she works with government agencies, exchanges, financial institutions, and insurance and cybersecurity companies to help solve some of the world’s most high-profile cyber criminal cases.
Kim was trained in economics at the London School of Economics and in politics at Oxford University. Previously, she explored technological advancements in developing countries as an academic research associate at the London School of Economics and was an economics researcher at the New York City Economic Development Corporation.
In this podcast, Jane Lo, Singapore Correspondent interviews Kim to highlight key findings from the Crypto Crime Report 2021 and the criminal activities that contribute to USD 10 billion of illicit transactions in crypto currency during 2020.
She introduces the approach to identify and map illicit transactions to crypto currency wallet addresses, and the methodology to trace the crypto proceeds from crimes, to their placement into today’s financial system.
She also discusses the outlook for the top crime types transacted in crypto currency – Scams, Darknet Markets, and Ransomware, and the trends observed year-on-year.
Drawing on distinctions in data and information available in the fiat versus the crypto world, she shares some key takeaways for law enforcement and anti-money laundering specialists.

  • Episode 248 - Quantum technology and implications for security in today’s computer infrastructure
Jane Lo, Singapore Correspondent speaks with Tommaso Gagliardoni, PhD, an Italian cryptographer, mathematician, and quantum security researcher. Tommaso obtained a degree in Mathematics at the University of Perugia, Italy, and a PhD at the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, with a dissertation on the quantum security of cryptographic primitives.
He worked at IBM Research Zurich with famed cryptographer Dr. Jan Camenisch. He then joined Kudelski Security, an innovative, independent provider of tailored cybersecurity solutions to help enterprises and public sector institutions assess risks and vulnerabilities and protect their data and systems. Headquartered in Switzerland and in the USA, with offices in 32 countries around the world, the Group employs around 3,500 people.
Tommaso published many influential peer-reviewed academic papers in the areas of cryptography, quantum computing, security and privacy, and spoke at many international conferences in these fields.
He is known, among other achievements, for his collaborations in solving the longstanding problem of adaptive quantum authentication (EUROCRYPT 2018, TQC 2019) and breaking the security of ISO-standard smart card protocol PLAID (Real World Crypto 2015, SSR 2015).
In this podcast, Tommaso introduces the concept and properties of qubits in quantum technology and what it means for computational advantage.  He explains the implications for the cryptographic protocols underpinning security in today’s computer infrastructure and applications including Bitcoin, and the search for next-gen mathematical problems and cryptographic schemes (“quantum-resistant schemes”) to secure tomorrow’s infrastructure.
The discussion also explores the promises of quantum technology such as quantum money and debunks some of the popular myths such as the potential of teleportation and violation of Einstein’s relativity.
