This ain't gonna lick itself... Quite a life mantra, and yet, we went there ever so briefly. We talked about how success isn't just one thing, one goal but perhaps even the movement toward a goal... nd how true success is about remaining adaptable and not wallowing in regret when a plan does not unfold as you had imagined. Why is everything so complicated? Does it need to be? Complicated simplicity, how things that are simple are really the result of things that have been well-thought out. What's the rush? Why are you in such a hurry to grow up? Stop and appreciate everything around you while you can... time will pass by so quickly and you will eventually be on the north side of 50 and realize you never really did slow down enough to taste life. Or not, hell, I have no idea.

This was a rare treat for Dad, to have his daughter who gave him the book, sitting directly across from him in the studio to record this episode. It was a little strange to see the immediate feedback, the faces and body language as the conversation progressed. I'm not sure if we will do in-person episodes on the regular, but we probably will. It gives a different dimension to the podcast and ... we'll grow into it, I think. Besides, it gives Dad an excuse to buy a few new audio toys. The typewriter you hear in the beginning... that was just me torturing my daughter as she was sitting, ready to talk... I was typing up nonsense but I looked like I was tapping out some urgent thoughts from my noggin. I was setting the stage, as it were....

Today, dad called his daughter who was in the middle of a cross-country move, while caring for two kids under two. For the record, she is not smarter than her brother and they are both way smarter than me. Don't be @-ing me on the twitter over this... it was just some light-hearted humor to grease the conversation. I wonder, though, how long it will be before they catch on that I am deliberately waiting those long pauses to see how long it takes them to get in there... and how many times they repeat the prompt before answering it? Lest you start feeling sorry for them, they both agreed to the TOS. :-)

Today, dad called his son and asked what "be the best of whatever you are" meant to him and why this pearl of wisdom was right. At one point, dad mangled the word "mistake" which is its own irony. The reference to Aerosmith? That is probably another story for another day.

So we finally meet, you the reader, me the writer. It is a common misconception that writers and authors are wiser than the average person. We’re not; we’re just too dumb to admit that to ourselves before we commit words to paper… or screen… you know what I mean. 

See? The dumb is already shining through, like tarnished pennies. 

Like how I walked that simile around the block? Yeah, same here. I’m really full of myself right now. I hope you enjoyed that display of vanity. 

I just got done watching every season of Grace and Frankie on Netflix. I’m still processing what it all means and where it’s going, but maybe I’ll share my .02 on that show. Are you watching?
