For new all age comic books this week you’ve got a great variety of books to choose from. Personally, I’m packed with giddy anticipation because the first of DC Comic’s new titles arrive in stores. This is not the umpteenth reboot of their catalog titles, rather it’s four new comics that start with Future Quest. Future Quest #1 comes out this week and will be followed by Scooby Apocalypse, Jonny Quest, Wacky Raceland and The Flintstones. It’s a return to some classic Hanna-Barbara which hasn’t been seen in comic books for a long time.

However, in stores this week readers can dig into all sorts of great books. Invader Zim #10 is a great book for any age, packed with dry humor, kid friendly sci-fi action and great colors. If you like Lumberjanes (and you should-it is great) #26 comes out as does an all new special Lumberjanes Special Axe Tale #1. Do you have a girl that’s looking for a title with action and heroes that she can relate to? If so, Princeless Make Yourself #2 and Princeless Raven Pirate Princess are up you alley, these titles are great for any and all, but will appeal to girls more.

In superheroes Spidey #7 from Marvel comes out. It’s rated “T” by Marvel, but the content is going to be OK for ages 9 and up. Also check out Actionverse #6 from Action Lab Entertainment.

It’s a busy week for Bongo Comics because Simpsons Comics #229 and Futurama Comics #79 are available. Both of these titles are consistent, funny, well drawn and parallel the enjoyment that you have from the television screen to all age comic books with ease. Goldie Vance #2, Plants Vs. Zombies #11, Strawberry Shortcake #2 and lots of others come out too.

The new all age comic books the week after Free Comic Book Day are typically lighter than normal. This week is still busy though and has lots of great new comics for readers of any age. One bonus of going to the comic book store now is that there aren’t any lines, but there are still lots of free comic books available. They’ll certainly have some for you to get, but the same rule of five comics per customer will apply.

Humor comic books this week has Penguins of Madagascar: Elitest of Elite #3 of 4 that has the birds in search of another spy agency that has gone missing.  Archie Funhouse Jumbo Comics #20 is all color, classic Archie and available at supermarket check outs and most comic book stores. Humor also brings the funny with Donald Duck, Scooby Doo, Spongebob and more.

You can page the 80’s because Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs are back; issue 3 of their mini-series is out, as well as, Micronauts with (coincidently) issue 3 of their series. The first was a sci-fi, western mashup with anime roots that all but had Bruce Campbell in it for camp value. Miconauts was one of the first comics to take a look at the microverse and make is dangerous and fun, but with a chest you could see through! You can also enjoy the action with Actionverse #5 from Action Lab Entertainment, Atomic Robo, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and more.

With superheroes this week you can find Batman 66’, the camp classic’s final issues have come to graphic novels with volume four and five, each sold separately.  Are Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles superheroes or action? Either way their latest #58 is out and is great for readers 8 and up.

It’s the week of Free Comic Book Day and there are still tons of new all age comic books coming to stores with lots of things to love for young readers. If you like Adventure Time you’re in luck because there are three new graphic novels. In other humor releases you can dig into Regular Show #35, Popeye Classics #46, Uncle Scrooge #14, MLP and many others. For the record, there is absolutely no shame in referencing My Little Pony at MLP, it’s the same as TMNT, except with more ponies and fewer turtles.

Superheroes have a couple new Little Golden Books that are timed to compliment the release of Avengers: Civil War that comes out this week. There is also the all age comic trade paperback that collects Supergirl, Cosmic Adventures in the 8th Grade, issues 1-6, Scooby-Doo Team Up #16 and Marvel Universe Avengers Assemble Civil War #3.

This week in science fiction and action young readers can jump into I Mage #3, this is the finale to a storyline and will start a new arc with the next issue. It’s a great comic if they like fantasy, action, dwarves fighting and teens saving the day, good for readers 9 and up. Do you have a TMNT fan that needs a refresher? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Allies & Enemies trade paperback has a rogue’s gallery of the evils and friends that support them in the sewers. This has more realistic art and is great for readers 9 and up.

Marvel Comics has something cool this week in that they’re rolling out several Star Wars titles in their True Believers line. These are $1 priced comics; that are either reprints of old stories or several stories collected to introduce them to new fans. There are nine Star Wars books coming out this week like that, including a reprint of the first one back in 1977. Most of these are all age comic books, but some might be for readers 9 and up.

Free Comic Book Day is almost here! It’s always the first Saturday in May and in 2016 in on the 7th. There are dozens upon dozens of comics for teen and adult readers and just under two dozen title that are all age comic books. These are full size comic books that sometimes have full size stories and in other cases have two short stories that introduce a couple characters or plot lines. There is something for every young reader, all age comic book fan or anybody who likes to read.

Your local comic book store will vary, but on average you can take five (5) free comic books on Free Comic Book Day.  While any comic book is a good comic, it pays to plan ahead, especially if you’re with a young reader where the content of the book is of concern.

Everything listed below is an all ages comic. Some might be for ages 9 and up, if that’s the case we’ll break it down for parents accordingly. Free Comic Book Day is a great chance to get kids interested in reading in a subject that they want to read about. Name an interest, demographic or genre and it is featured in some way on FCBD. Archie

This features most of issue #1 from Archie and a snippet of Jughead. It’s important to note that this is not your parent’s Riverdale. The art is modern, the situations that Archie, Veronica, Betty and so on experience are in line with today’s teens. There are still some classic nods like the soda shop and the tough guys wearing leather jackets, but this series is utterly modern and totally awesome.

Awake

Awake is from Action Lab and is great all age science fiction/action for anyone. It features a boy and girl protagonist who are unaware of each other, yet working to accomplish the same thing. The comic also has some nice advertisements in the back for their other all age titles including Hero Cats of Stellar City, Mage, Action Lab: Dog of Wonder and Super Human Resources.

Bob’s Burgers

Bob’s Burgers is from Dynamite and is OK for all ages, but middle school kids and older will really enjoy it. Even older readers (see: me) will appreciate the varied art and endless possibilities that the artists have with the covers. The FCBD version of Bob’s Burgers is a great example of this. It features three short stories and a cover gallery that pulls inspiration from classic art. This is fun stuff that everyone should pick up.

BOOM! Studios

BOOM! Studios produces some of the best titles in comics on a consistent basis. They also do some of the best all age comic books. This is the first of a sampler collection from a publisher that we’ll feature for FCBD. It has six short stories and is one of the comics that you (or your  young reader) must pick up. Jim Henson’s Labyrinth, Mouse Guard, Adventure Time, Lumberjanes, Goldie Vance and The Cloud are all given space in this fabulous comic. Each short story has a different art style, storytelling pace, comedic timing, level of abstractness and more.  Simply put, there is something for everyone in the BOOM! Studios sampler, pick it up.

This week in all age comics has the return of Strawberry Shortcake. The Purple Pie Man also comes back with all of her friends to show a new generation what Shortcake is all about. In other humor all age comic books this week check out Peanuts #32, Disney Princess #3, Madagascar #2, one of two new Archie books at the supermarket, a droll tale of cats or many others.

Science fiction/action features two Doctor Who magazines, Ghostbusters International #4, Invader Zim #9, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #6, Sonic Universe #84 and a couple other titles that will satisfy any young reader fan.

For superhero all age comic we’ve got four titles that are all from the same publisher, Marvel Comics. They do not have a corner on the all age superhero market, but there are some weeks where they are the only game in town, in regards to super powers and young readers. Spidey #5, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #7, Marvel Universe Ultimate Spider-Man Contest Champions #2 and another Spidey graphic novel all hit this week.

Spidey and Squirrel Girl technically have Teen ratings by Marvel. The content in those comics are OK with any age reader, but the vocabulary might be too advanced for some younger readers. Squirrel Girl also has a little bit of sass and sarcasm, just in case parents are trying to avoid those traits.

It’s just two weeks before Free Comic Book Day and many of the titles out this week will have free versions available on May 7. One of the best books in all age comics comes out this week; Lumberjanes #25 is great for girls or boys, with a balance of science fiction, friendship and humor. Also out in humor for all age comics is Grumpy Cat & Pokey, a new ongoing series by Over the Garden Wall, Simpsons Comics #228, a trade paperback from Peanuts and more.

In science fiction/action comics there is a great comic targeted at the reluctant 9 year old reader. Another Castle is a mini-series from Oni Press that combines fantasy, action, monsters and the insecurities about growing up. Back to the Future #7 is a great example of how to take the story from a well known movie and continue it into the world of comics. This is a fun series that any age will enjoy, but does have vocabulary that might be too big for 6 year olds. For tween fans of mutant monsters Godzilla Oblivion (#2 of 5) comes out, as does Welcome to Showside from Z2 comics.

Plants Vs. Zombies #10 is one of our comics of the week. This series is so much for kids 7 and up. Our 6 year old has not ‘embraced’ zombie culture, but he likes this book. As a parent I thought that any form of zombie to a kid that age would scare him. I was wrong. This comic is lots of fun, with countless moments of humor, comical zombie villains and humans who always end up on top.

For old school fans or entry fans who like trading cards, Star Wars Original Topps Trading Cards Vol 2 Empire Strikes Back comes out in book form. These were the jam when they came out, now in book form.

This week in all age comics is fresh, closely followed by girl power. By that I mean when I look at the new comics for young readers I see lots of titles that are either brand new to the medium or ones that they’ll know from television. Some weeks the new releases have a good number of classic titles-and while there are a couple older characters in books this week they’ve all got a new feel. There are also some cool comics that speak more to girls with strong characters, action, independence and intelligence.

Wait, intelligence in a comic book? Oh yes. In science fiction and action this week Doctor Who (the 9th Doctor) issue 1 in his own ongoing series starts as he masters time, space and teaching folks about English quips. Jeremy Whitley does a great job with the Princeless series and this week the Princeless Make Yourself mini-series comes out. This is issue 1 and tells the story of five female dwarves whose job it is to protect the others from dragons, just in time for a massive pink horned dragon to be seen over the mountains.

Sonic the Hedgehog #280, Star Wars Little Golden Book Force Awakens, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Animated Adventures #9 and many others also come out.

In humor the second issue of Action Cat and Adventure Bug, Spongebob Comics #55, Scooby Doo Where Are You? #68 and others hit. One of note for those that like Lumberjanes is Golde Vance. This is a mini-series about a young girl who wants to be a detective, but factor in some of the charm that Boom! This week in new all age comics brings a return of a true classic, The Three Stooges. It’s slapstick, punch humor that may not translate to some families and their children, but hop back in the time machine and this was family entertainment back in the way day.  Some of the other humor comics this week include Regular Show, Bob’s Burgers, Loony Tunes and Mickey Mouse to name a few.

Superhero all age comics bring a trade paperback of Batman Adventures, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #2 and the classic (again!) Black Lightening trade paperback that collects issues 1-11.

All age sci-fi fans have it made this week, Back to the Future, the illustrated Alice in Wonderland is available for the first time in its entirety in paperback, The Dark Crystal Volume 2 Creation Myths, Star Wars Poe Dameron and much more.

It’s just over a month before Free Comic Book Day, which is the first Saturday in May. This year it’s the same weekend as Mother’s Day, so mom, take the kids to your local comic book store that day, it’s win-win.  We received all of the comics that will be available this year for Free Comic Book Day and there are some jamming all age comics in the bunch.
