  • 15 “Daddy Saturday”: intentionality & actionable parenting
My next Dad, Justin Batt, is the founder of the “Daddy Saturday” movement and non-profit organisation. Justin’s mission is to impact 10 million fathers in the next 10 years.
Justin has 4 kids. A daughter of 11 years and three boys 9, 7 and 5. His wife is an entrepreneur and because she started a bridal boutique he found himself alone with his daughter every Saturday when she was two old. Add three more boys to the mix within the next six years and Justin found himself on his own every Saturday with more and more kids over time. He grabbed opportunity and “Daddy Saturday” was born. Saturday is the day entirely devoted to, carefully curated and planned with his kids.
Other Dads started reaching out or joined in and the rest is history. Justin’s says Dads are not born with a field manual and his aim is to inspire and provide practical applications on how to engage with your kids. His focus is on actionable parenting, intentionality and implementation.
We talk about his movement, intentionality and structure in the home, the concept of failing and Justin’s, very practical, experience shares one can apply in an instant. Another great concept we explore - he calls it pivoting - parents can apply before difficult conversations happen.
The most powerful takeaways for me as a dad where:
I have to be equally aligned with my wife in the things that matter to build a united front.
Don’t burn all your fuel during the week.
Don’t be your kids’ hero; be your kids guide and find more guides for the things you’re not good at.
Excessive use of screen time as parents and fathers rubs off on my kids. Big one for me.

  • 14 Jamie Mitchell one of the most inspiring waterman alive on his role as a Dad.
My next dad is THE Jamie Mitchell, maybe the most inspiring watermen alive. Jamie is a 10X World Paddle Champion and professional big wave surfer. Jamie Mitchell has created a life from the ocean, one which he wants to be able to pass down to his children. Born in Australia and now living on the islands of Hawai’i with his wife and two daughters, he sees we are on an ecological path that must be changed.
When we spoke Jamie had just completed his “Seven Crossings Project” that comprised of a 5 day & 170-mile paddle (!) of the Channel Islands in an effort to raise money and promote solutions towards a sustainable planet.
Jamie told me the reason for his project where his daughters who are 2 and 4 today. He wants to raise awareness for the global climate crisis we are in today. He is right and it makes a lot of sense to support Jamie in his efforts.
Besides the seven crossings project we chatted about his perspectives as a young dad of two girls, Jamie opened up on some of the things he struggles with as a dad and how he manages to translate his insights and dedication as a professional athlete to Being a Dad.
We also talked about his own upbringing, his parents and what impact his dad had on himself growing up.
The most powerful takeaways for me as a dad where:
It is important to stand for what you believe in and be that role model for your kids.
If you want your kids to surf at the age of two or three, use goggles.
Let your children decide, and take the lead on, when they want to learn and at which speed they’d like to progress.

  • #12 The beautiful journey of captain Gerard le Suer, “Dad at Sea”
Gerard le Suer is a very dear friend of mine, he has two sons (8 and 10), and he is an amazing Dad.
Gerard is a traditional healer (“Sangoma”), business consultant, coach, surfer, entrepreneur, sailor and of course passionate Dad. Together with his family has been sailing around the world for the last 14 months with his wife and their two boys.
In our session Gerard opens up on his own transformation from being a business consultant travelling alone and being away from the family most of the time to now spending pretty much 24/7 with his family.
We also talk about their travels as a family and the surrounding challenges, schooling, particularly in the perspective of travelling with kids and leadership in family. Gerard shares some pretty awesome insights on what we can learn from our kids and we talk about the issue with society suggesting you always have to strive for happiness all the time. We also talk about money, happiness and the value of time.
Towards the end Gerard shares some mind-blowing thoughts on the different maps us and our children operate on in this world and how we perceive our self-decided identities as the reality.
The most powerful takeaways for me as a dad where:
Happiness is not relative to ownership but comes out of relationship.
Money comes at an opportunity cost in the form of time for most of us.
Happiness is a result, joyfulness is a state.
Don’t get stuck in a belief just because it’s written down somewhere.
As always, if you like this session please do subscribe to the podcast and leave me a review. Please share this episode with others who need to hear this.
Please enjoy another session of DADicated.com with Gerard le Suer.

  • #11 the uplifting story of Marcus, shot in combat shortly after becoming a first-time dad
In this next session I sit down with Mark and Marcus Haney, both father and son. The session is powerful and interesting.
Marcus, a Purple Heart U.S. Marine, was shot in Afghanistan during a fire fight in combat shortly after becoming a first time dad himself.
Mark, Marcus’s dad is a serial entrepreneur who works with and invests in entrepreneurs in the Sacramento area since 2011.
In this session we talk about how it felt for Mark to send his son off to a warzone and Marcus‘s journey of leaving for war as a strong Marine - without kids - and to come back as a wounded, immobile and totally dependent first-time Dad (Marcus had to undergo 5 surgeries and many months of intense recovery).
Marcus opens up and shares his story of going through a difficult divorce during that time. Essentially he suddenly found himself having shift gears dramatically and having to fight a very different kind of battle upon his return; it was a long journey for him and, despite the stigma of PTS(D), in the end he was allowed to be a dad to his son Hunter with 50/50 custody. I found his positive attitude and insights very inspirational.
We also talk about society’s, often contradictory, expectations on men and dads, entrepreneurship, the Haneys’ values as a family and some of the systems they use to keep their bonds strong.
The session gives deep insights into valuable aspects of fatherhood in difficult situations.
The most powerful takeaways for me as a dad where:
My own issues are not half as bad as I often make them out myself.
Continuously execute on your important goals without excuses.
Always move forward, bad things from the past don’t matter.
Thank you for supporting me by sharing this session with other dads and moms.
Please also leave me a review, I love your feedback!

  • #10 Rob & myself have 8 prem babies combined On parents relationships, own identities & family first
Rob Murray is a passionate Dad of three kids who are all born premature. His 4 year old was 5 weeks early and his 2 year old twins were 8 weeks early. I have 5 premature kids (10.5 and 10 weeks).
Rob runs a digital agency business called intrigue that is growing 30% a year for the last 6 years, he is also the president of Entrepreneurs Organization in Ontario in Canada and he does lots of charitable work and he is very involved in his local start-up scene.
Rob shares very valuable insights and strategies he and his wife Megan developed to keep their relationship strong and their family tight. We talk about challenges him (and myself) are facing with having had so many (prem babies) babies almost "at once".
A big part of the session is about dadicated.com and our goals with the project because Rob’s wife couldn’t believe my story and told him to ask me all these questions since.
The most powerful takeaways for me as a dad:
My wife’s and my relationship must come first to ensure a solid, safe foundation for the kids.
Rob reminded me of what my good friend Alon told me: ensure you maintain a healthy balance of all your own roles and identities - even after there are kids.
If I ask my wife what chores need to be done this is actually more mental load on her.
If I want say yes to “family first”, I need to say NO to something else.

  • #9 life lessons from a dad who experienced bankruptcy with Conor Neill

My next dad’s name is an inspiring man, Conor Neill. Conor is a Professor at IESE where he runs Leadership courses, he is an author, a keynote speaker, a serial entrepreneur and the Spanish President of Vistage, the worlds leading CEO organisation.

He is Irish with two children from two marriages and obviously a very passionate dad. The session is inspirational and powerful because Conor has done some deep introspection of which he shares in powerful ways.

Despite his amazing career the most profound insights in this session stem from Conor’s bankruptcy and how this business failure seriously humbled and changed him as a person - and as a dad. The event made him question many of his own behaviours. It also impacted heavily on his family-life and marriage and it’s interesting to hear how his values changed drastically in the years thereafter.

Ultimately the bankruptcy brought him closer to himself and also his family.

Conor is very well spoken and interesting. We address thought-provoking points around family, business, value systems and personal development - and of course being a dad.

The most powerful takeaways for me as a dad and entrepreneur where:

    1. Personal success is worth nothing if it doesn’t come with family-success at the same time.
    2. Kids over work.
    3. When it seems the price could be fair, it’s fair.
    4. "We judge ourselves by our intentions but others only see our actions." This counts for our children as well!
    5. "Time is finite." Don't fill is with busy work but focus on the important things.
    6. Many asked how you can support this project:

      2. Leave a review
      3. Share the podcast with other moms and dads - thank you!

        6. #8 Jason Reid on his son's suicide and teen suicide
This session is very powerful and intense. Jason Reid is 52 years of age, he is married and has three children. Last year his fourth son, Ryan, killed himself.
Jason shares his son's story, his perspective as a Dad and his views on parenting and the challenges our children are facing in todays world. He gives a lot of valuable practical and powerful advice. Although the session is very sad and the topic difficult, teen suicide and depression are important points of conversation we need to have. Teen suicide is the second leading cause of death for the age range 15 to 24 in the U.S.A.
Jason has since brought an organisation to life called chooselife.org and is on a mission to end teen suicide by the year 2030. He has also produced a documentary on teen suicide called "Tell My Story" (links below).
The most powerful takeaways for me as a dad where:
Our kids do not hear us, they emulate us. Be authentic and teach them vulnerability by being vulnerable yourself.
Speak each other, to your own kids and to other kids. "I’m fine." is not a sufficient response from my child when my gut tells me otherwise.
Parenting is inconvenient. Kids talk to us when they want to. Make sure you catch it when it counts.
And lastly: the world has changed, our parenting needs to change accordingly.

        7. #7 John Gray of "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus"
My next dad is John Gray. You probably know him as the author of Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. The book was a long time bestseller in the 90s, he’s sold millions of his books.
John is an interesting dad and our session was different and thought provoking. John dives deep into his work of the last few decades and translates his thoughts on the differences between men and women to dads and moms.
We cover his standpoints on relationships, hormones, psychology, the difference between men and women and how we deal with stresses, diet and what dads and moms can teach their children when they are balanced in their own powerful energies as men and women.
The session is honest and straightforward, which I like a lot. Some of the things John says or rather how he says them would be unpopular or politically incorrect - and that’s exactly why I found the conversation so interesting! If we launch into stuff you find difficult, I urge you to look beyond that and listen for your own value.
The most powerful takeaways for me as a dad where:
Violence comes from anger and fear and happens when you don't have role models who solve problems.
Be a strong outside presence for your children and teach them that just because something difficult happened once, it doesn’t necessarily have to happen over and over again.
Teach your daughters how they can trust in other people and be interdependent by making sure they can trust in you.
How you treat your partner will translate to your own children.
          Fathers can provide resilience.
Kids need to hear: you did your best and your best is good enough!

        8. #6 Flo Jung world champion & down to earth DAD!

Florian Jung is one the most progressive windsurfers globally, ocean adventurer and environmentalist and obviously a super passionate Dad. Flo opens up about his challenges around family-life and being ‘modern gypsies’ - travelling with everyone as a professional athlete.

We talk about his hopes and dreams for his son and how his perspective changed completely since he became a father. Flo shares his plans for his near future and his passion for the environment and the ocean. We discuss emancipation and how parenting has changed from when we were kids ourselves.

Maybe the most powerful topic that keeps popping up in this session is the fact that we should leave our children of whom we borrowed this planet a decent Mother Earth. Flo is very passionate about conservation and we talk about the ocean crossing he is planning for (this was recorded in March 2019, due to an injury shortly after the project hasn’t happened yet).

We talk about ‘digital challenges’ with kids, the impact we are having as a dad per se and of course actually taking responsibility for the impact you're having on your children by your own choices and actions.

My key takeaways as a dad where:

          • If I eat chocolate, they can eat chocolate.
          • Be intentional around your own actions and be aware of the impact your decisions have on your kids
          • Spend as much time with your family as you can.

            • #5 Andrew Shortell lost a baby & was accused of shaken baby syndrome
Andrew Shortell is a dad of two children. Him and his wife lost their son Tristan at 4 months back in 2014 and where accused of shaken baby syndrome in the aftermath. The accusation was only cleared after many painful months and obviously the whole situation was beyond traumatic.
Andrew takes me through what happened that particular night when they lost the baby and he shares how he managed to cope with the whole situation. The session is very powerful and sad. Andrew told me afterwards that he feels this could be the starting point for his own healing. I truly wish this for him!
Despite the tragic story somehow they got through and with the arrival of their third child managed to turn their life back into a positive and happy outlook. This was awesome to hear!
The session with Andrew left me thoughtful and inspired.
The key takeaways for me as a dad where:
              Carry on, never give up
Deal with sadness and loss as soon as you can. Don’t carry the sadness.
It was powerful to hear how Andrew was able to focus his energy on the rest of the family and managed to turn things around
Professionally Andrew is a Washington, D.C. based live event producer and film director.
