  • #4 Yat Siu on consistency, empathy & education
Dadicated.com: Yat Siu (Chinese: 蕭逸) is a Hong Kong based Dad, entrepreneur, angel investor, classically trained musician, director of the Asian Youth Orchestra, Global Leader of Tomorrow at the World Economic Forum, and Young Entrepreneur of the Year who was born and raised in Vienna, Austria. Yat is co-founder of the Dalton Learning Lab, which emphasises divergent thinking and design thinking for children. His extraordinary views on our educational systems, how we teach and educate our children. In short, Yat is awesome!
His extraordinary views on our educational systems, how we teach and educate our children, dealing with kids' gaming addictions and how he proposes to deal with digital and screen-time in principle intrigued me from the start!
In this session Yat shares his views (and frustrations) on today’s education system (outdated information arbitrage we force upon our children really), tech and the digital worlds us and our kids live in. Yat shares amazing personal learnings and ideas on dealing with gaming addiction and how he and his children deal with conflict as equals.

  • #3 Grant Hatch “Being Dad” with stage 4 lung cancer
Grant Hatch is truly inspiring. He has four boys, he is extremely intelligent and has been successfully fighting stage 4 cancer for quite some time. Grant has managed to change his condition’s diagnosis from terminal to chronic by means of various treatments he initiated.
This conversation, I was privileged to have with him, in essence is so powerful because Grant truly opens up how he feels like as a Dad of four with cancer but also, because we actually did not focus on the cancer so much. I was very interested in the Grant before and after the diagnosis and Grant shares some amazing insights. To put it lightly, I was blown away by Grant’s positivity, his energy and vibe.
Grant feels very strongly about educating the public on cancer and Radon, a radioactive, natural gas that most likely caused Grant’s condition. Please do watch this powerful video here: https://youtu.be/PB3nLBu4urg
Note: This recording is about 10 months old upon publishing.

  • #2 Walter Lee’s son Zy has only one arm, no legs

As a Dad Walter found his calling when his 3rd son, Zy, was born with only one complete limb. His left arm.

    Read that again...

The doctors had not picked up Zy’s condition on the scans during the pregnancy and so Zy’s condition came as a complete surprise upon his birth.

He decided early on to “prepare the child for the road and not the road for the child.” Walters modus operandi is to INSPIRE, EMPOWER and ENABLE. And it truly is! I felt inspired and humbled after our session.

In this episode Walter Lee and myself discuss the challenges AND the upsides of living with and empowering a differently abled child. Walter shares his life-learnings and opens up about how his family dealt with this unusual situation that memorable 30th of September 2006 brought. Walter talks about his journey as a Dad, his fight for justice and how he managed to enable his son’s walking by the age of two!

His foundation’s mission is to bring “INDEPENDENT LIVING” to the 10 million children with movement disabilities in South-east Asia. The foundation has since grown with a branch in Malaysia and activities also in Tanzania, Japan and other South-east Asian countries.

Walter (a.k.a. Chef Kani) is a serial entrepreneur, celebrity chef, restauranteur, author, speaker, lecturer, and now, social worker and farmer. He speaks 8 languages and is married with 3 children.

Walter and Zy’s motto is: “Fail fast, fail different, fail forward!” & Zy responds “...and fail young”.

If you, like myself, also had goosebumps during this episode, please do share this and leave a review. Greatly appreciated!

“Give us a chance and you’ll be surprised.” (Walter Lee)

    Enjoy!

    • #1 Warren Rustand: strategies on building successful families

My next guest, Warren Rustand, is an inspiring leader, a business man and of course a Dad. He has seven children and nineteen grandchildren. This session is truly impactful and to this day I have never met another Dad as clear and focussed as Warren. Warren is 77 today he is an ex-NBA player, a White House Fellow and later served as White House Appointments Secretary to the U.S. president. Warren is the past chairman of the World Presidents' Organization and various other impressive things.

In business, Warren has listed numerous times, sat on many boards and has led big companies. Despite all of this, his true passion is family and this is where his main focus lies.

The session is a profound share of experience and wisdom by a seasoned Dad and family man with defined priorities and clarity of vision. In this episode Warren takes us through his learnings of as a father and husband. He explains his family mission and vision system and tells us how he managed to create a successful family that shares their lives on a multi-generational farm today.

Warren gives valuable practical advice on parenting and marriage. He runs us through his value and belief system, clear overarching principles, priorities and how he drives & achieves positive results in his family life.

The most powerful takeaways for me as a dad where:

      • Your relationship with your partner is the foundation for everything. Keep it strong and healthy.
      • Ask your child what she wants from life. Start early and do it often.
      • If you have a family vision and clear values defined things become a lot easier.
      • Apologize, forgive, carry on.
      • Teach your kids to work and create a family bank.
      • Technology can rupture families.
      • Same answer from dad and mom, always.
      • It’s critical to have one on one relationship with every child, every week.
      • Building consensus around rules in the family is one of the most powerful principles.
