I was about to switch the tv off when I saw it.

“Our next item is a beautiful charm bracelet. This bracelet was made for Lady Victoria, by her fiancé. Rumour has it that this charm bracelet has the ability to grant wishes. At the low cost of $1.00 you can get this steal of a deal. Free shipping and handling if you call the number of the screen right now.”

I snatched my phone up from the bed and immediately dialled the number and placed my order. The next two weeks seemed to drag. Finally, my package arrived. I was admiring the sapphire stones as they glittered under the light when my phone rang.

“Hey honey, what are you up to today? Do you have time for lunch?”

“Hey mom, sure. Our regular spot at 1pm?” I asked.

“Sure, honey see you then.”

As I was putting on my shoes my eyes glanced over at the box with the bracelet. I always believed in magic, so I fastened the bracelet on my wrist quickly.

The cab pulled up and I walked towards it. I got into the cab and greeted the driver. I gave him directions to where I was headed. A few minutes after sitting in the cab the driver says, “That’s a beautiful bracelet.”

“Why thank you,” I said admiring the bracelet on my wrist.

“It looks really special,” The cab driver continued as he looked up at me in the rear-view mirror.

“I actually got it from a tv show commercial. They said it also grants wishes.” I trailed off.

“Do you believe that your wishes will be granted?” the cab driver asked.

“Yes, I do,” I smiled.

“Can I have some gummy worms mommy?”

“No Juliet. We only have money for instant noodles today. And besides, gummy worms are bad for your teeth.”

“But I likesss them mommy!”

When I was a toddler I always gave my mom a hard time in the store. I didn’t really understand that we were poor and what it really meant when people lived in a trailer park. I thought they were just fun, cool boxes and we were all just one big happy family.

Everyone loved me there – I think I was everyone’s favorite kid. The thing they loved most about me though was my hair. It was soft, golden and looked exactly like the perfect hair in the shampoo commercials even though we had no money for hair products most of the time. The strangest thing about my hair was that it wouldn’t stop growing!

While most babies were born looking like bald headed aliens, I was born with a perfect head of hair. By the time I was a week old, my hair was longer than I was. My mom would have to cut it off every morning after my bath but by the next day, it would have already grown back.

Eventually I used my hair to take us out of the trailer park and into Beverly Hills – but you have to keep watching to find out how!

No one knew why my hair kept growing and growing. Sometimes my mom would let it get really long for fun and this was exciting for everyone in the trailer park. The women liked to try different silly hairstyles on me. Or sometimes they’d let the neighborhood kids play games with it.

I’d stand in the middle of five trees then they’d part my hair into five and tie each part to a tree. Then they’d just play limbo with it or find something else silly to do. I didn’t mind because it was fun for me too.

My best friend was Jason. We were the same age and as we got older, we started to understand that we were both poor. Our parents sent us to school for the first time when we were already seven years old. We should have been in the second grade but we had to sit in kindergarten with all the little kids because we didn’t know how to read or write. It was embarrassing because the kids our age would always tease us at recess.

School was just a horrible experience overall – they called us names like ‘the trailer park kids’ and ‘Mr. and Mrs. Hillbilly’. It didn’t help that we only had about three outfits and one pair of old shoes.

Hello. My name is Stephanie and I'm tired of being a superhero.

I have a brother and sister, I am 12, my brother is 11, and my younger sister is 9 years old. We have peculiar parents: they believe in karma and soul transmigration. And for some reason they decided that it was I who sinned a lot in past lives and now I have to work extra hard to make up for it. This sounds like nonsense, I know.

Since I was little, I was taught to always share and help everyone. I help my parents at home, my brother and sister, my friends, passers-by on the street, anyone who comes to me, and because of this my friends jokingly call me a superhero. But can it be otherwise?

I know that it can be for others, but not in my case. I am so used to the parade of good deeds, I participate in, that I lost sight of myself.

“Stephanie, can you give me your new dress for a while? I have wanted one like it,” my sister asks, and of course I give it to her. This dress, by the way, I bought with my own money I had been saving, and had dreamed of owning for a long time.

"Stephanie, I’ve barely eaten today, can I eat your meatballs?" my brother asks. And I give him my meatballs, and then I count the minutes before dinner and hope not to die of hunger in the meantime.

Friends invite me to hang out, and we make plans to watch a movie or just chill, but once I’m at their place they ask me to help them clean. "Sorry, dear, it’s just my dad will be home soon, we need to clean up, or he will be veeery angry ... you can help me, right? And we'll watch the movie some other time –promise!"

Once we went to an amusement park with our whole family, we had fun, and then my mother told me: "Stephanie, I think you should give your ice cream to that girl in a yellow polka dot dress. She just dropped hers and she’s very sad about it. " This was the first time I decided to object, I said that I am also a child, I also love ice cream and I don’t want to give it to a stranger.
