Today in History: In 1948 CE, David Ben-Gurion made Israel's declaration of independence. We “hereby declare the establishment of a Jewish state in Eretz-Israel, to be known as the State of Israel … Placing our trust in the ‘Rock of Israel,’ we affix our signatures to this proclamation.” The new state was recognized that night by the United States, soon followed by the USSR (now Russia). At the same time, it was attacked by five Arab countries.

"Yom Ha'Atzmaut" (Israel Independence Day) is normally celebrated on the 5th of Iyar, but it is moved earlier or later if the

Yom HaZikaron is Israel's Memorial Day for fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism. At 8:00 p.m. on the evening before, sirens
sound throughout Israel and most of the country stand for 1 minute of silence. At 11:00 a.m., the siren sounds for 2 minutes and again the nation stops to remember those who died.
