We “hereby declare the establishment of a Jewish state in Eretz-Israel, to be known as the State of Israel … Placing our trust in the ‘Rock of Israel,’ we affix our signatures to this proclamation.” The new state was recognized that night by the United States, soon followed by the USSR (now Russia). At the same time, it was attacked by five Arab countries.
