Today in history: Tu BiShvat (New Year of the Trees): In the Torah, God says that the fruit from newly planted trees in Israel is forbidden for three years (see Leviticus 19:23–25). Instead of counting the age of each tree, all are counted from the 15th of Shvat (Tu BiShvat) , the New Year of the Trees. Today, Tu BiShvat is celebrated by planting trees in Israel, and with a festive meal, somewhat similar to Passover. It celebrates the Land of Israel and its fruit.
This week's portion is called Yitro (Jethro)
TORAH PORTION: Exodus 18:13–23
GOSPEL PORTION: Mark 10:13–31
