That is my question. Do I use Kubernetes extensively in my next HashiCorp Vault course or stick with an IaaS deployment. The answer, of course, is to do both. I think I'll end up leaning more into the K8s side of things, but I don't want to leave the VM folks out!

The annual State of DevOps report from Puppet is out and some of the conclusions mirror what I've been hearing in the industry. DevOps teams are out, Team Topologies are in. Using the vanilla cloud is out, and building an internal platform is in. This is an opportunity for infrastructure engineers to get their programming merit badge while providing real value to the business. Cool stuff!

Mitchell Hashimoto has announced he is stepping away from a leadership position at HashiCorp to focus on an engineering, individual contributor role. That is a massive change, but I also think it will be great for HashiCorp and for Mitchell himself.

Google and Microsoft have very distinct design philosophies and nowhere is that more obvious than on GCP vs. Azure. Microsoft's approach boils down to simplicity and ease of use. But there's a cost to simplicity, and that cost is usually paid by security. Google, in contrast, prefers lean and efficient systems, at the cost of consumer experience. I don't think either approach is fundamentally better, but I think I know which the market prefers.

To learn to program or not? That is the question. Whether it is nobler to suffer the slings and arrows of IaC infrastructure, or takes arms against a sea of troubles and by learning Python end them? Every three months or so I find myself pondering the question once again, and still I am undecided.

I mean you can, if you really want to. But there are so many possible paths to take in tech and not all of them include managing people. Some folks are great at it, others learn to be great at it, and then there's those of us who just can't. If you can't, don't.
