Bryan Kohberger, who pleaded guilty in July 2025 to murdering four University of Idaho students, filed a handwritten petition for post-conviction relief Monday in Ada County District Court, asking to withdraw the plea and get a trial. Representing himself, Kohberger alleges ineffective assistance of counsel and says he was convinced to falsely confess. Those allegations are untested and unanswered; his plea and sentence — four consecutive life terms without parole, plus ten years — currently stand. The family of Kaylee Goncalves, killed alongside Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin, said he wants another chance to roll the dice. Also: in Plymouth, Massachusetts, jurors in Lindsay Clancy's murder trial heard the 911 call Patrick Clancy made after finding Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, at their Duxbury home in January 2023. Judge William Sullivan barred media from recording or reproducing it. Clancy has pleaded not guilty and argues lack of criminal responsibility due to postpartum psychosis. And in Elizabethtown, New York, Luciano Frattolin's trial continues in the death of his nine-year-old daughter, Melina Frattolin, whose mother, Kali Galanis, testified Tuesday that Melina had not wanted to travel with her father. Frattolin has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and concealment of a human corpse and is presumed innocent.

Lindsay Clancy's murder trial opened Monday, July 27, in Plymouth Superior Court, with her ex-husband Patrick Clancy as the Commonwealth's first witness. Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in the January 24, 2023 deaths of her children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months — at the family's Duxbury, Massachusetts home. She does not dispute that she caused their deaths; the contested question is criminal responsibility. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington argues postpartum psychosis; Assistant District Attorney Shanan Buckingham told jurors Clancy acted deliberately. Judge William Sullivan is presiding, and Patrick Clancy's testimony resumes Wednesday. Also: in Meigs County, Ohio, Samuel Hochstetler, 19, pleaded guilty July 24 to aggravated murder in the March 12, 2025 killing of 28-year-old schoolteacher Rosanna Kinsinger, and was sentenced by Judge Linda Warner to life with parole eligibility after 25 years — remaining counts were dismissed under the plea and were never proven at trial. And in Las Vegas, Raqiya Smith, 25, and Ameea Blue, 30, are charged after a July 21 fight outside a Boulder Highway Walmart; police say Smith called her husband, Travis Dewayne Ward, 35, and told him to bring a gun. Ward shot Kwame Swain, 28, inside the store and was killed by LVMPD Officer Cristobal Magana outside. All charged parties are presumed innocent.

In Los Angeles, David Anthony Burke — the singer known as D4vd — completed a week of preliminary-hearing testimony in the death of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez, whose body was found in a vehicle at a Hollywood tow yard in September 2025, a year after she was reported missing. Burke has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14, and unlawful mutilation of human remains; prosecutors laid out physical, digital, and financial evidence, the defense attacked the investigation, and Judge Charlaine Olmedo will decide whether the case goes to trial. The DA has not said whether he'll seek the death penalty. In Winder, Georgia, the sentencing of Colt Gray, 16 — who pleaded guilty to all 55 counts in the September 2024 Apalachee High School shooting that killed teachers Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie and 14-year-olds Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo — continued, as investigators testified about a notebook of advance planning that contradicts Gray's claim to police that the shooting was spontaneous; Judge Nicholas Primm will choose between life with or without parole. And in Fort Myers, Florida, Zachary Latham, 24 — acquitted in 2020 of killing a neighbor in a viral TikTok feud — was sentenced as a habitual violent felony offender to 12 years for the attempted kidnapping and strangulation of a woman who ended their relationship, plus witness tampering. A three-case roundup. In Winder, Georgia, 16-year-old Colt Gray pleaded guilty to all 55 counts, including four counts of malice murder, for the September 2024 shooting at Apalachee High School that killed teachers Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie and 14-year-olds Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, and injured nine others. The plea was non-negotiated; Gray faces a minimum of life, and Judge Nicholas Primm alone will decide parole eligibility at a sentencing hearing that began this week. Prosecutors showed a notebook in which Gray had mapped a classroom and planned the attack in advance, contradicting his earlier claim it was spontaneous; survivors and victims' families delivered impact statements. His father, Colin Gray, was convicted of second-degree murder in March for providing the rifle. In Gulfport, Mississippi, Jerri Roby, 69, was sentenced to life after pleading guilty to first-degree murder in the death of her 42-year-old son, John Gaither, whom she shot and concealed behind a wall she built, then impersonated for weeks; a judge cited hardware-store purchases made before the killing as evidence of premeditation, and Roby had a prior murder conviction. And Sean Combs, whose federal case this show first covered, was reportedly placed in solitary confinement at Fort Dix after a fight with another inmate; the Bureau of Prisons has declined to confirm the details. In Bayside, Queens, seventeen-year-old Judy Placido is sitting in a parked car with twenty-year-old Salvatore Lupo, talking about Son of Sam, when the window blows in — both survive, and Judy will not speak publicly about it for twenty-two years. Then, at 8:37 on the evening of Wednesday, July 13, 1977, lightning strikes a Con Edison substation on the Hudson, and the largest city in America goes dark for twenty-five hours: 1,616 stores damaged, more than a thousand fires, and the largest mass arrest in New York City history. In Part 2 of the five-part series Summer of Fear, the city finds out. On January 30, 1977, Christine Freund, twenty-six, and her fiancé John Diel leave a screening of Rocky in Forest Hills and never make it to the dance; Christine dies that morning, weeks after their engagement. Thirty-seven days later and half a block away, a nineteen-year-old Barnard College honor student named Virginia Voskerichian is killed walking home from the train with her books in her arms. Then a technician in a police ballistics lab lays two bullets side by side — one from Virginia, one taken from Donna Lauria in the Bronx eight months earlier — and the striations line up. On March 10, 1977, Police Commissioner Michael Codd and Mayor Abraham Beame tell eight million people that one man with one revolver has been hunting them. Six weeks later, on Easter weekend, Valentina Suriani, eighteen, and Alexander Esau, twenty, are shot in a parked car in the Bronx, and a white envelope is found lying in the street beside them. Fifty years ago this month, New York City was broke, burning, and about to meet the .44 caliber killer. In Part 1 of the five-part series Summer of Fear, Garret Fisher walks into the New York of 1976: a bankrupt city $14 billion in debt, five thousand police officers laid off, a police union handing out a survival pamphlet titled "Welcome to Fear City," the South Bronx going up in insurance fires, and six million people crowding the harbor to watch the tall ships sail in for the Bicentennial. Twenty-five days after those ships sailed, on July 29, 1976, eighteen-year-old EMT Donna Lauria was shot dead in a parked car in Pelham Bay, and Jody Valenti, nineteen, was wounded beside her. Nobody knew a serial killer had started. Over the months that followed, Carl Denaro, Rosemary Keenan, Donna DeMasi, and Joanne Lomino were shot in two more attacks across Queens — and no one connected them, because the precincts didn't talk. A three-case roundup. In Santa Fe, New Mexico, a jury convicted Isaac Apodaca, 30, of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in the 2022 death of 21-year-old Grace Jennings, who was killed with a sword in a detached garage after asking to stay the night. Nobody disputed Apodaca swung nothing; his girlfriend Kiara McCulley pleaded guilty and testified that he manipulated her into it over months. Apodaca was remanded into custody; sentencing has not been scheduled, and first-degree murder carries a life sentence in New Mexico. In Saratoga County, New York, Timothy Besaw, 35, was sentenced to 12½ to 25 years — the maximum under his plea — for the death of 69-year-old Walmart employee Michael Bushey, who was struck by Besaw's car after telling him to leave the parking lot and died three weeks later of a blood clot following multiple surgeries. And in Payette, Idaho, Andrea Shaw, 23, charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of her 18-month-old twins, had her $2 million bond revoked entirely after requesting a reduction; Judge Kiley Stuchlik cited risk to Shaw's newborn. Shaw has not entered a plea and is presumed innocent; the cause of the twins' deaths remains disputed. This episode discusses the deaths of children.
