Commemoration
Today we commemorate St. Mary Magdalene. Present at the crucifixion, Mary Magdalene had become a follower of Jesus when He cast out seven demons from her. She was also the first to see Jesus alive again after the crucifixion. The Church has long identified her with the woman who anointed Jesus’ feet with oil.

Commemoration
Today we commemorate Ezekiel. Called by God to be a priest to the exiles during the Babylonian captivity, Ezekiel prophesied about the inevitable judgement on Jerusalem, which took place in 586 BC with the destruction of both the city and the Temple. After the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple, Ezekiel prophesied hope to the exiles, delivering God’s promise of a future restoration in the coming Messianic Kingdom. Much of Ezekiel’s prophetic symbolism would be later used by St. John in Revelation.

Commemoration
Today we commemorate Elijah. Prophet to the Northern Kingdom of Israel, largely during the reign of Ahab, Elijah condemned Baal worship that had been promoted by Ahab’s wife, Jezebel. Through Elijah, God performed many miracles, demonstrating both Elijah’s status as a true prophet and the truth of Elijah’s message condemning Israel’s idolatry. At the end of his earthly life, Elijah was taken up to Heaven in a fiery chariot.

Commemoration
Today we commemorate Ruth. A native of Moab, and therefore not a natural descendant of Abraham, Ruth is the subject of the biblical book that bears her name and a study in God’s grace. During a famine in Israel, Elimelech and Naomi of Bethlehem moved to Moab with their two sons; the sons married Moabite women and then a decade or so later died, leaving the women as widows. Naomi told her daughters-in-law to return to their people, but Ruth refused, stating: “Where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.” After arriving in Bethlehem, Boaz, a relative of Naomi, agreed to marry Ruth and become her ‘redeemer’. Ruth gave birth to Obed, grandfather of Kind David, making Ruth great-grandmother to one of OT Israel’s most famous kings and an ancestress of Christ.
