Commemoration
Today we commemorate Elizabeth of Hungary. Daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary, Elizabeth married Louis of Thuringia, a German Landgrave, but was widowed a mere six years later. After making provisions for her children, Elizabeth used her dowry to found a hospital where she personally tended to the sick — something she had been doing most of her life. Commemorated for her charity and self-sacrifice, Elizabeth fell ill and died in 1231 — joining her husband who had died four years earlier at the age of twenty-six — she was only twenty-four.
