Sanctions prevented Syrian artists and galleries from participating in global events or trading artworks easily. Artists struggled to access basic art supplies, forcing them to improvise with whatever materials were available. The local market for art remains small as people prioritise daily needs over artistic pursuits. Despite these difficulties, Syrian artists have continued to document their experiences through their work. Syria has a rich artistic heritage, from ancient times to modern street art, but sanctions made much of it invisible. With potential relief from sanctions, Syrian artists hope to reconnect with the world’s creative stage.

Claire Manera, emergency coordinator of medical aid group Doctors Without Borders, known by its French initials MSF, says conditions in Gaza are “like nothing [she’s] ever seen”, with people flooding into clinics malnourished and displaced. Israel’s nearly three-month aid blockade, which the government has said it is just starting to ease, has caused enormous harm to women and children in particular, says Manera.

The European Union has lifted all sanctions on Syria, to help the war-torn country recover, following the toppling of the Assad regime in December. Foreign ministers from the bloc's 27 member states struck the agreement during a meeting in Brussels. The move follows a similar move by US President Donald Trump to lift sanctions on Syria, that was announced in Saudi Arabia last week.

Britain, France and Canada are stepping up pressure on Israel for its renewed offensive on Gaza. They have threatened to take “concrete actions”, including imposing sanctions. In a joint statement, the leaders of the 3 countries called on Israel to immediately allow aid into the Strip. Israel is rejecting calls to end its blockade.

23 western countries and the European Union have issued a joint statement saying Israel’s decision to allow a “limited restart” of aid operations in Gaza must be followed by a complete resumption of unfettered humanitarian assistance.

The UN's tool for improving food security, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, says extreme hunger in Gaza is worsening by the day. An IPC report says more than 93 percent of children in Gaza, that's about 930,000, are at risk of famine because of the ongoing war and blockade on the territory.

The leaders of Britain, France and Canada are warning of action against Israel if it does not end its military assault and the blockade on Gaza. In a joint statement, they said Israel's denial of vital supplies to the civilian population is “unacceptable” and risks breaching international law. Husam Zomlot is the Palestinian Ambassador to the UK. He says that the statement by Canada, France and the UK threatening action against Israel if it does not stop a renewed military offensive in Gaza and lift aid restrictions is “19 months late”, but is nevertheless “very significant”.

The flurry of international statements comes as Israel is ramping up attacks across Gaza, as a part of a major ground offensive. More than 60 people have died across the strip since dawn on Monday. Israel has warned residents in Khan Younis to flee to an area it bombed yesterday al-Mawasi or risk being killed.
