United States military strikes on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, have killed dozens of people and wounded many more, according to Houthi-affiliated media reports. The attacks killed at least eight people around the city, while at least 68 died in a strike on a migrant detention centre, Houthi media reported on Monday. The US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM), responsible for military operations in the Middle East, refused to offer details of the latest strikes but acknowledged carrying out more than 800 attacks on targets in Yemen since mid-March. More than 250 people are now reported to have been killed in the campaign.

US attacks a detention centre holding African migrants in the northern province of Saada. The Houthi-affiliated Al Masirah TV says the prison housed 115 inmates and that at least 30 people were killed in the attack. Another 50 were wounded and have been transferred to the hospital for treatment. Most of their injuries are critical. Yemen’s official Saba agency, citing a security source, says there are dozens of victims and that rescue teams have been putting out a fire caused by the bombing. There was no immediate comment from the US military. The US Central Command issued a statement before news of the strike broke, seeking to defend its policy of offering no specific details of its extensive bombing campaign. “To preserve operational security, we have intentionally limited disclosing details of our ongoing or future operations,” CENTCOM said. “We are very deliberate in our operational approach but will not reveal specifics about what we’ve done or what we will do.”

The deal offered by the United States is an “unfortunate compromise” that should be accepted by Russia and Ukraine, argues Anatol Lieven, director of the Eurasia programme at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. Lieven tells host Steve Clemons that Ukraine’s leaders should acknowledge that the Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia over the past years are lost. He adds that Russia – by accepting a ceasefire on current battle lines – has “given up” on trying to occupy all the territory of Ukraine it had hoped for. Meanwhile, Europe “has nothing serious to offer” to end the fighting, Lieven says.

Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces have executed at least 31 people, including children. That's according to the Sudan Doctors Network, which condemned the killings, calling them a war crime and a crime against humanity. RSF fighters accused the victims of links with the army.
