  • Will Donald Trump reshape the American economy?
President Donald Trump wants to transform the United States into a manufacturing powerhouse. His favourite tool to help him achieve that is tariffs. He believes the measures will help bring revenues and relocate factories to the US. The trade-off is many Americans will have to suffer short-term pain for long-term gain. Consumers are now downbeat on the outlook for the economy, and they are buckling down. Stock markets are flashing warning signs. Despite that, Trump seems intent on pressing ahead with his plans. • Hamas gives update on ceasefire negotiations as Israel bombards Gaza
Basem Naim, a member of the Hamas Political Bureau, has told Al Jazeera, “We received in the last few days before the brutal aggression against our people in the Gaza Strip a new American proposal from Mr Witkoff [the US envoy] through the mediators.” Naim added this was a “bridging proposal which will see the exchange of prisoners for a return to the condition’s first phase, a temporary ceasefire, the opening of borders and aid into Gaza and engaging in second-phase negotiations”. Naim said the parties were close to a breakthrough until Netanyahu decided to launch the latest attacks for his “internal political calculations” to appease the far right.

  • Renewed Israeli escalation won’t eliminate Hamas: Analysis
Israel’s resumption of its assault on Gaza will not succeed in defeating Hamas just as 16 months of war also failed to do so, says HA Hellyer, a political analyst at the Royal United Services Institute in London and the Center for American Progress in Washington, DC. “I think what you’ve seen with this recommitment of different ground forces is a desire for Tel Aviv to turn the clock back in terms of the last month or so,” Hellyer told Al Jazeera.

  • Is US support for Israel complicating efforts to reach peace in Gaza?
There's been widespread international condemnation of Israel's renewed bombing of Gaza, including from the United Nations. But not from the Trump administration. The US was the only country on the 15-member UN Security Council to back Israel's air strikes at a meeting on Tuesday. Emboldened by President Donald Trump's support, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says negotiations with Hamas will only continue 'under fire'. It comes as Itamar Ben-Gvir was reappointed as national security minister - a move likely to strengthen Netanyahu's coalition government. Where does this leave Hamas and the mediators?

  • ‘Humanity buried as children die’: UNICEF’s global spokesperson condemns Gaza violence
James Elder, UNICEF’s global spokesperson, expressed profound distress over the ongoing violence in Gaza, where over 15,000 children have been killed in 15 months. He described the harrowing scenes of families digging through rubble with bare hands, saying, "Humanity is being buried whilst the world watches children being killed again in Gaza." Elder condemned the blockade of humanitarian aid, noting that essential supplies like vaccines, ventilators, and water are stuck just kilometres away, while children die from preventable causes. He stressed that international humanitarian law is being "breached again and again," with UN facilities and workers also targeted. Elder called for an immediate ceasefire, urging those in power to prioritise children’s lives, stating, "It should not be hard to centre the world’s attention on ending these horrors."
