  • Israel’s far-right Ben-Gvir reappointed as national security minister
The Israeli government has reappointed Itamar Ben-Gvir as national security minister - a move that is likely to strengthen Benjamin Netanyahu's Party. • Why has Israel shattered the ceasefire in Gaza?
Israel has launched its biggest assault on Gaza since January 19, when a ceasefire was agreed between Hamas and Israel. Hundreds of Palestinians have been killed. Many more have been forced to flee homes they had only just returned to. Israel says the strikes were ordered because of a lack of progress in talks to extend the ceasefire. The White House has confirmed it was consulted about the attacks before they were carried out. Hamas is calling on Israel to be held responsible for violating the agreement. So can Netanyahu achieve his goals through war?

  • Palestinian UN ambassador says Netanyahu ended deal for domestic political reasons
Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour addressed the UN Security Council, condemning Israel’s overnight attacks on Gaza and urging full implementation of Resolution 2735. He accused Israeli leaders of prioritising "political survival over the survival of hostages" and pursuing "mass forcible displacement and annexation" in Gaza. Mansour stressed the need for a two-state solution, warning that Israel’s actions aim to "close the door of peace and open the door of war." He called on the Council to support the Arab-led peace plan, saying, "Life must prevail. Liberty must prevail. Peace must prevail." Mansour urged immediate action to sustain the ceasefire, end the occupation, and achieve Palestinian independence.

  • Total blockade of Gaza to have ‘disastrous impact’: UN emergency relief coordinator
Tom Fletcher, the UN emergency relief coordinator, briefed the Security Council on the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Territory, expressing deep distress over Israel’s total blockade since 2 March, which has cut off food, medicine, fuel, and cooking gas for 2.1 million people. He condemned the "systematic rejection" of repeated requests to access aid at Kerem Shalom Crossing, leaving supplies to rot and expire, and described the blockade as "unconscionable" and a violation of international humanitarian law. Fletcher warned of catastrophic consequences as essential supplies are rationed, food prices soar, and public health risks escalate due to overcrowding and poor sanitation. He contrasted this with the 42-day ceasefire, during which aid delivery surged, hostages were released, and humanitarian operations effectively scaled up, but lamented that the return to hostilities has reversed this progress, leaving civilians in "abject fear." Fletcher urgently called for three actions: allowing humanitarian aid into Gaza, renewing the ceasefire to protect civilians and release detainees, and securing adequate funding for the humanitarian response, which is only 4% resourced. He also raised grave concerns about settler violence and displacement in the West Bank, where 95 Palestinians, including 17 children, have been killed this year.

  • As they restart war on Gaza, the US & Israel are seen as the real ‘axes of evil’: Marwan Bishara
Marwan Bishara, Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst, dissected the Israeli government’s recent military escalation in Gaza, linking it to Prime Minister Netanyahu’s military, strategic, and personal agendas. Militarily, Netanyahu has repeatedly stated his intent to "end Hamas and effectively Gaza," leaving no room for surprise. Strategically, Bishara argued that the escalation aligns with proposals to displace Gaza’s population, noting, "No such transfer is possible without war." Politically, he highlighted Netanyahu’s need to "coalesce his coalition" after recent setbacks and to deflect from his ongoing corruption trial.
