KATHOPANISHAD 2.2.8

य एष सुप्तेषु जागर्ति कामं कामं पुरुषो निर्मिमाणः ।

तदेव शुक्रं तद्ब्रह्म तदेवामृतमुच्यते ।

तस्मिंल्लोकाः श्रिताः सर्वे तदु नात्येति कश्चन । एतद्वैतत् ॥ ८ ॥

ya eṣa supteṣu jāgarti kāmaṃ kāmaṃ puruṣo nirmimāṇaḥ |

tadeva śukraṃ tadbrahma tadevāmṛtamucyate |

tasmiṃllokāḥ śritāḥ sarve tadu nātyeti kaścana | etadvaitat 8

जो यह जीवों के कर्मानुसार नाना प्रकार के भोगों का निर्माण करने वाला परमपुरुष परमेश्वर प्रलय काल अर्थात् सुषुप्ति काल में समस्त जीवों के सो जाने पर भी जागता रहता है, वही परम विशुद्ध तत्त्व है, वही ब्रह्म है। वही अमृत कहलाता है तथा उसी में सम्पूर्ण लोक आश्रय पाये हुए हैं। उसे कोई भी अतिक्रमण नहीं कर सकता। यही वह परमात्मा है, जिसके विषय में तुमने पूछा था व मैंने बताने की प्रतिज्ञा की थी।

That Supreme Person, the Supreme Lord, who creates various kinds of experiences for living beings according to their deeds, remains awake even at the time of dissolution — the period of deep sleep (Sushupti) — when all beings are asleep. He alone is the Supreme Pure Essence; He is Brahman. He is called the Immortal, and in Him all the worlds are sustained. None can transcend Him. This indeed is that Supreme Self (Paramātman) about whom you inquired and which I had promised to explain to you.

CONTENTMENT is never the outcome of FULFILMENT, of ACHIEVEMENT, or of the possession of things; it is not born of ACTION or INACTION. It comes with the fullness of WHAT IS, not in the ALTERATION of it. That which is FULL does not need alteration, change. It is the INCOMPLETE which is TRYING to become complete that KNOWS the turmoil of DISCONTENT and change. The COMPLETE is unreal, and the pursuit of the unreal is the PAIN of discontent, which can NEVER be healed. The very ATTEMPT to heal that pain is the SEARCH for the UNREAL, from which arises DISCONTENT. There is NO WAY OUT of discontent. ऊर्ध्वं प्राणमुन्नयत्यपानं प्रत्यगस्यति ।

मध्ये वामनमासीनं विश्वे देवा उपासते ॥

ūrdhvaṃ prāṇamunnayatyapānaṃ pratyagasyati;

madhye vāmanamāsīnaṃ viśve devā upāsate.

जो प्राण को ऊपर की ओर उठाता है और अपान को नीचे की ओर ढकेलता है, शरीर के मध्य (हृदय) में बैठे हुए उस सर्वश्रेष्ठ भजने योग्य परमात्मा की सभी देवता उपासना करते हैं।

It is Paramatma (The Supreme Self) who sends prana upward and who leads apana downward. All the devas (gods) worship that adorable One seated in the middle.

मृत्योः ह मृत्युमाप्नोति यह इस नानेव पश्यति।।

प्रथमोध्याय — तृतीय वल्ली

हे नचिकेता! तुम जीवात्मा को तो रथ का स्वामी - उसमें बैठकर चलने वाला समझो, और इस शरीर को ही रथ समझो, तथा बुद्धि को इस रथ का सारथी (रथका चलाने वाला समझो) और मन को ही लगाम समझो।

ज्ञानी जन इस प्रकार इन्द्रियों को रथ के घोड़े बतलाया है, और विषयों को उन घोड़ों के विचरने का मार्ग बतलाया है। तथा शरीर, इन्द्रिय और मन इन सबके साथ रहने वाला अविद्या युक्त जीवात्मा को ही कर्ता बतलाते हैं।

जीवात्मा यदि बुद्धि सारथी को सद् मार्ग पर चलने की प्रेरणा करता तो वह शीघ्र परमधाम पहुँच जाता। परन्तु वह सांसारिक नाम-रूप तथा यह मैं-मेरा के माया जाल में फंस कर बुद्धि को सद् प्रेरणा देना भूलगया। जिससे बुद्धि रूपी सारथी असावधान होकर मन रूपी लगाम को ढीला छोड़ दिया। जिसके फल स्वरूप दुष्ट बलवान इन्द्रियाँ रूप घोड़े सांसारिक शब्द, रूप, रस तथा गन्ध विषयों में भटक विषय-विष का पान कर अत्यन्त दुःख को प्राप्त हो रहा है।

परन्तु जो मनुष्य विवेकशील बुद्धि रूप सारथी से सम्पन्न और मनरूप लगाम को वश में रखने वाला है, वह सांसारिक मार्ग के पार पहुँचकर परब्रह्म पुरुषोत्तम को प्राप्त कर लेता है, जहाँ से फिर लौटना नहीं होता।

प्रथमोध्याय — तृतीय वल्ली

तुम जन्म जन्मान्तर से अज्ञान निद्रा अर्थात् देहभाव में ग्रसित् हो सो रहे हो। अब परमात्मा की दया से यह देव-दुर्लभ मुक्ति के द्वार रूप मानव शरीर प्राप्त हुआ है। इसे पाकर एक क्षण भी आलस्य में मत खोओ। अतः हे मनुष्यों! उठो जागो सावधान हो जाओ और श्रेष्ठ महापुरुषों के पास जाकर उनके द्वारा उस परब्रह्म परमेश्वर को जान लो। परमात्म तत्त्व बड़ा गहन है। उसके स्वरूप का ज्ञान, उसकी प्राप्ति का मार्ग सद्गुरु की कृपा के बिना प्राप्त होना असम्भव है। क्योंकि त्रिकालज्ञ ज्ञानी जन उस तत्त्वज्ञान के मार्ग को छूरे की तीक्ष्ण धार के सदृश भब बन्धन काटने वाला बतलाते हैं:

ज्ञान का पंथ कृपाण की धारा।

पड़त खगेश होई नहीं बारा।।
