A couple Alastair worked with, Dom and Priya, had been stuck in the same pattern for years. Whenever Priya offered an opinion, Dom would argue it down, not aggressively, just persistently, until she gave up and stopped sharing what she thought at all. He never noticed he was doing it. Arguments like this usually go wrong not because the topic is hard, but because one person enters trying to win rather than trying to understand.
In this episode, you'll learn the simple shift that changed everything for Dom and Priya: before offering his own view, Dom's only job became asking a genuine question about hers first. Not to challenge her, but to actually understand her. You'll learn how to try this yourself, pausing before you respond in your next disagreement and asking a real question, while staying open to the possibility that your partner's view might be right too.

There's a belief that quietly puts enormous pressure on relationships: that if your partner is truly right for you, they should meet every need you have. Best friend, confidant, entertainment, emotional support, adventure partner, all at once. It's a beautiful idea. It's also an impossible standard, and one of the surest ways to leave both people feeling like the relationship is failing.
In this episode, Alastair explains the difference between couples who let the relationship become their entire world and those who keep friendships, hobbies, and community alive alongside it. The second group tends to feel far less pressure, and their relationships grow deeper as a result. You'll be challenged to think honestly about your own life outside the relationship, identify one need you've been placing entirely on your partner, and take a small step today toward meeting it somewhere else too.

It's easy to focus on what you wish your partner would do differently: listen better, show more affection, pay closer attention. But what if the fastest way to get more of what you need is to give it first?
In this episode, Alastair shares the story of Adam and Zoe, a couple stuck in a familiar standoff, and the simple shift that changed things within a week. You'll learn how to apply the Golden Rule as a daily relationship habit: identify what you most want from your partner, then start offering it to them today, without keeping score or expecting anything in return. It's a small change that compounds into something much bigger.

Every couple has genuine differences, not just preferences, but real, structural ways they're different from each other. Left unaddressed, those differences can become an ongoing source of friction. But the couples who handle them well haven't eliminated every difference. They've simply decided which ones are worth raising, and which ones are just part of loving this particular person.
In this episode, Alastair shares the story of a couple whose eight-year tension over tidiness finally shifted when one partner reframed the question: would he rather have a tidier home, or his partner exactly as she is? You'll learn the difference between resignation and real acceptance, and a simple way to sort your own list of differences - is this genuinely important enough to raise, or is it just different, and worth letting go?

Every relationship has a running balance of warmth, trust, and goodwill - an Emotional Bank Account, a concept developed by author Stephen Covey. Every act of kindness, appreciation, or genuine care is a deposit. Every harsh word, moment of dismissal, or neglect is a withdrawal. That balance shapes how a relationship feels day to day, and how well it holds up when things get hard.
In this episode, Alastair shares the story of a couple whose account had slipped into deficit — not through any single dramatic event, but through a slow reduction in small positive things. You'll learn how one partner turned it around with small, deliberate deposits: a hug instead of walking past, a specific compliment, helping without being asked, saying thank you instead of taking things for granted. The goal isn't obsessive tracking - it's building the habit of making more deposits than withdrawals, consistently.

Most people don't think of deciding things without their partner as a relationship problem. It just feels efficient. You know what you want, so you decide, and move on. But making decisions that affect you both without checking in first sends a quiet message: that your partner's input wasn't needed. Repeated over time, that message erodes their sense of being an equal partner in a shared life.
In this episode, Alastair shares the story of a couple where one partner made shared decisions on his own without realising how much it cost. His partner told him she felt like a passenger in her own life rather than an equal partner. You'll learn the simple rule that changed things: before any decision that affects you both, pause and ask, even for something small. Not as a formality, but because their perspective might genuinely change the outcome.

There's a particular kind of loneliness that can grow inside a relationship. It's not because two people have drifted apart. It's because one or both have quietly stopped sharing what's really going on inside. You can be warm with each other, communicate well about the practical stuff, and still not really know each other's inner world.
In this episode, Alastair shares the story of a couple who looked warm and connected, but who, when asked, barely knew what was currently going on for each other. You'll learn the simple daily habit that changed that: sharing one real thing each day, and asking your partner to just listen, without jumping to advice. Then you reciprocate, so you both build the habit of really knowing each other again.

When a couple came to Alastair convinced their relationship needed a major overhaul, he taught them something much simpler instead. According to decades of research from Drs John and Julie Gottman, it usually isn't dramatic differences that separate happy couples from struggling ones. It comes down to about six hours a week, spent in small, ordinary moments rather than big gestures.
In this episode, you'll learn exactly where those six hours go: a two-minute greeting and goodbye each day, five minutes of appreciation, five minutes of physical affection, and twenty minutes of real conversation. Add two hours of quality time and one hour for a relationship check-in each week, and that's the full six hours.

When your partner makes a critical comment, it's tempting to focus on the words themselves, such as "you never help around here" or "you're always late." But the specific complaint is rarely the whole story. Underneath it, there's usually something deeper: feeling unseen, unappreciated, or lonely in the relationship.
In this episode, Alastair shares a real example of a couple who broke this pattern by getting curious instead of defensive. You'll learn why curiosity is the antidote to defensiveness, and a simple question to ask yourself the next time criticism lands: deep down, what might my partner actually be feeling? Then you'll learn how to respond to that feeling directly instead of arguing about the surface complaint.

It's easy to compare your relationship to other people's - especially the polished version you see on social media or in passing conversation. But that comparison isn't fair. You're measuring your ordinary Tuesday against someone else's best moment, and it will make you feel worse every time, even when your relationship is genuinely healthy.
In this episode, Alastair explains why appreciation (and not comparison) is the real antidote. You'll learn how to catch the comparison thought before it takes hold, and ask yourself how much of what you're seeing is actually real. Then he shows you how to turn your attention back to your own relationship: what you love about your partner, the history you share, and the small moments that matter but nobody else sees.
