On October 4, 1955,  after more than half a century of futility, the Brooklyn Dodgers finally win a World Championship, thanks to Johnny Podres' 2-0 shutout of the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. The turning point of the historic contest proves to be an outstanding catch by defensive replacement Sandy Amoros in the sixth inning that robs Yogi Berra of an extra-base hit with two on, resulting in a rally-robbing double play. Gil Hodges drives in both runs to support Johnny Podres’ complete game effort.

On October 15, 1969 -- In Game 4 of the Fall Classic at Shea Stadium, Tom Seaver and the Mets beat the Orioles in ten innings, 2-1. The game features an outstanding run-saving diving catch of Brooks Robinson's sinking line drive with two on in the ninth inning by right fielder Ron Swoboda and a controversial play in the tenth when J.C. Martin unquestionably gets in the way of Pete Richert's throw, without the umpire not calling interference on the baserunner.

On April 22, 1970 — Tom Seaver of the New York Mets strikes out the last ten batters he faces in a 2 – 1 victory against the San Diego Padres. Seaver gives up only two hits and finishes with a total of 19 strikeouts, tying Steve Carlton’s major league record.

On April 7, 1969, At Washington’s RFK Stadium, Ted Williams makes his managerial debut for the Washington Senators, in front of President Nixon and a crowd of 45,113, a franchise attendance record for Opening Day. The Commander-in-Chief throws out the ceremonial first pitch. Williams loses his first game to the New York Yankees, 8-4, on Opening Day at RFK Stadium. Williams will manage the Senators for three seasons, before moving with the team to Texas in 1972.

On July 10, 1934, in one of the most memorable All-Star Game performances ever, Carl Hubbell strikes out five consecutive future Hall of Famers. Hubbell fans Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, and Joe Cronin.After three scoreless innings he leaves with the National League ahead, 4 – 0. The American League rallies, scoring nine runs off Lon Warneke, Van Mungo and Dizzy Dean, while Mel Harder pitches five shutout innings in relief of Red Ruffing to hold the lead. Frankie Frisch and Joe Medwick hit homers. Earl Averill’s three RBI are decisive for the AL’s 9 – 7 victory. Hubbell himself will gain election to the Hall in 1947.

On February 6 1895 —– Babe Ruth is born in Baltimore, Maryland. Ruth, who is considered by many to be the greatest player of all time, will start his career as a successful pitcher before amassing 714 home runs with 2217 RBI and a lifetime batting average of .342 on his way to Hall of Fame election in 1936.
