  • 012 | Practicing Inverse Gratitude During Adverse Times

It’s a great virtue to have gratitude and appreciate things in our lives but an even greater one is to have gratitude and appreciation when things don’t work out for us and for the obstacles and adversities that we face. We get so overwhelmed with the current scenario that we fail to notice the advantages those adversities bring with them.

We all face adverse times but the difference lies in how we respond to them. With a change in perception, we can start viewing our obstacles in the right light.

  • 011 | Good or Bad, Who Knows

It’s best not to label something as good or bad, and just take it as it comes without judging it or getting attached to it. Cultivating detachment and taking the middle ground is what helps us move forward in this journey of life.

As we let go of our innate urge to put circumstances, events, and people in either ‘good’ or ‘bad’ box, we enhance our ability to truly see them for what they are. We become more open-minded and bring curiosity, wonder, and humanness in our interactions with the world around us.

  • 009 | How You React Matters More Than What Happens To You

The wisest amongst us know that they have no control over external things. They can’t control their luck and fortune. They can’t prevent a catastrophe or calamity from happening. Instead, they take responsibility for themselves and hone their respond-ability. They know they might have no control over what happens to them in their life, but they are in charge of how they respond to it. If they endure and persist, they know they can transform an obstacle into an opportunity.

  • 008 | What is Ikigai?

Living a life of purpose has been linked with longer and happier lives. Studies have shown that losing purpose can have detrimental effects on a person’s well being and overall life.

A great model that helps us put this truth in a better perspective is the Japanese concept of ikigai. It doesn’t have an exact English translation but roughly it means “the reason that makes you jump out of bed each morning” or “the thing that you live for”. In essence, it distills down to having a purpose in life.

This concept has its origins in the Japanese island of Okinawa, which is said to have the largest population of the most elderly people in the world. In his TED Talk, Dan Buettner, an author, and National Geographic reporter, suggests ikigai as one of the reasons people in this location has had such long lives

  • 006 | The "Good" Mindset

Jocko Willink has a simple way of dealing well with failures, setbacks, and roadblocks. Whenever he faces a challenge and/or gets unexpected news, his response is the same as usual: “Good’. That’s wise and something that we all can learn from.

We all know how dark and challenging times can be immensely difficult to deal with it. But practicing the ‘Good’ mindset — when things don’t work out, we have better things in store for us — can be an effective and enriching way to get past them.

  • 003 | Become Kind and Loving

Somewhere along our day to day life as we get busy with our worldly duties, routines, and going through different experiences, we get distanced away from our innate kindness.
