When I was in middle school, I had a teacher that loved to torture us when we got caught talking during class.

She would make us stand in the corner with our arms straight out, while holding a big dictionary in each hand.

At first it wasn't a big deal, especially for us tough boys.

But the longer we held our arms out straight, the heavier it got.

We would finally get to the point where we couldn't hold them any more and would drop them and go sit down with our aching arms and shoulders.

Your stresses in life are the same.

    They are heavy.

    PUT THEM DOWN!

In his book, Relentless Success: 9-Point System for Major League Achievement, Todd Stottlemyre shares his personal story of “Taking the Quit Option Off The Table.”

In the 1987 off-season he put in a lot of extra work and effort in his attempt to live his dream to become a major league pitcher.

When spring training rolled around, it paid off and he was picked up by the Toronto Blue Jays.

But by August he was sent back down to the teams AAA team.

Todd dominated in AAA and was brought back up to the Blue Jays in September of 1988. He finally thought he was set, he was now a major league pitcher!

But at the end of the season, he was ready for some time to rest and recuperate, but the teams General Manager informed him that he would need to spend the winter of 1988 playing in Venezuela to learn how to throw a slider, or he wouldn’t make the major league club in 1989.

So for the second year in a row, he gave up his time off to work on his game and become a better pitcher.

In 1989 he was on the Blue Jays roster. He was feeling good, confident in himself, and living his dream.

But in May of 1989 he was pushed back down to the minor leagues again.

He was mad! He felt it was unjustified and he was major league quality.

For the first time in his life he questioned if he’d be able to live out his dream of being a major league pitcher. He considered quitting all together.

But he made the decision to go to the minors and become the best pitcher he could possibly be. He refused to quit.

One month later he was called back up to the Blue Jays!

He started 12 games that season. He pitched in game 2 of the playoffs against the Oakland Athletics. He became the youngest starter in a playoff game in the Blue Jays history. This was the start of his 15-year major league career which brought him 3 World Championships!

What if he would have quit?

What if he would have quit when he was only one month away?

What if you knew your success was only one month away? Give it everything you’ve got! Work harder than you’ve ever worked before. And in a month, if it doesn’t work out, well, you’re one month closer.

    Take Quitting Off The Table!

I've seen a lot of people figure out that they are on the wrong road to achieve their goals. But since they've already invested so much (time, money, effort, etc.) they choose to continue down that same road.

When you realize you're on the wrong road, it doesn't matter the investment you've made to this point, change direction. Get back on the right path as soon as possible.

On September 11th, 2001, Ari Schonbrun went to his office at Cantor Fitzgerald – the Wall Street firm that occupied the top five floors of Tower One – and he happened to be on the 78th floor changing elevators when the first plane hit.  In the midst of the smoke and chaos, Ari found a fellow employee who was terribly burned and who needed his help to walk her down 78 flights of stairs.

Of the 662 Cantor employees on the upper floors in the World Trade Center that day, only four survived. Everyone else was killed. Why did they survive? Was it simply luck? Or was it something more? Ari believes that God was looking out for him that day. There were many large and small miracles and if there’s anything that Ari does know it is how that day ended up being a day of rebirth.

Before 9/11, Ari had been focused on the wrong things. All he cared about was his job. He didn’t get it. He had lost sight of what matters most in life. After 9/11, Ari changed his life by putting his family first, by volunteering and giving back to the community, and by speaking to groups of people around the country.

Ari has been sharing and retelling his story to audiences worldwide since that day, and after repeated requests and testimonials to the power of his message he decided to take the next step and write a book.

Miracles and Fate on 78 reveals the power of creating meaningful connections to transcend the differences that often polarize and divide us from one another. A great and enduring reminder about what matters most in life

Alabama Head Football Coach, Nick Saban shared the following story:

One story I like to tell that happened to a player here.

He got into a little trouble when he was a freshman.

Some guys called him a bunch of names.

They were drinking and he got really upset.

And he grabbed one of them by the back of the neck.

Police came and he could have got arrested.

I called him in my office and said, man, you just can’t do those kinds of things.

    He said,

You can’t expect me to let people call me those kinds of names, do those kinds of things and not do something about it.

I said, you know what? I agree with you.

But you know, you’re going to be a first-round draft pick.

You’re going to make 30 million dollars if you’re a first-round draft pick.

If that cop would have given you an assault charge,

You would be a third-round draft pick and you would make 2 million dollars.

For 28 million dollars, is it worth it to be right?

You know what his response was?

You’ll never have any more trouble with me coach.

And he never did and he really became a first round draft pick and signed for 40 million

I missed it by 10 million

Sometimes you have to be able to realize what the consequences of your behavior is,, regardless of what your emotional commitment might be

Have you ever had imposter syndrome?

Did you feel like you were trying to do something you shouldn't be?

Why? What makes it so that you're not the one that's qualified?

Many times we feel like a fake because we are out of our comfort zone.

I talked about this in my episode yesterday, stepping out of your comfort zone is a good thing?

Our growth and success is on the other side of our comfort zone.

Just because you are trying to do something that is outside of your comfort zone, does not make you a fake.

Remember to always focus on the things that you can control or impact.
