Daily Updates on Russian Invasion of Ukraine

Ukraine has spent years asking for more missile defense, especially against ballistic threats. But this story is no longer just about what the West might send. It is about what Ukraine is starting to build for itself.

In this video, I walk through the emerging missile-defense and strike ecosystem Ukraine is putting together: G7 backing, expanded defense manufacturing, Czech cooperation on engines, the DRAGON air defense system, the ST-100 missile, the balloon-launched DART concept, and the Fire Point / Freya system being developed with German radar integration. This is not just a collection of new weapons. It is the outline of a much larger strategic shift.

I also explain why this matters in a bigger sense. Ukraine is moving from aid recipient to security partner. Its wartime innovation is producing systems that may not only help defend Ukraine now, but could shape European security and defense markets after the war.

And finally, I contrast all of that with Russia’s Oreshnik problems. While Ukraine is iterating and integrating, Russia may be pushing forward a missile system with significant guidance and quality-control weaknesses. That contrast tells you a great deal about where both countries are headed.

Today I look at a disturbing claim from a former Russia-1 editor who says Putin has been shown special edited news broadcasts for years — reports allegedly designed to create an idealized picture of Russia and, more recently, a distorted view of the war in Ukraine.

That raises a serious question: is Putin making decisions based on reality, or on a filtered version of the war created by the people around him?

Ukraine had a surprisingly strong 24 hours. Ukrainian drones struck targets across Russia, including logistics infrastructure and a sanctioned shadow fleet tanker. New Ukrainian weapons programs continue to advance, including a domestically produced glide bomb, an upgraded Neptune missile program, and a developing anti-ballistic missile shield.

At the same time, G7 leaders discussed expanding air defense support, interceptor production, and licensing arrangements that could allow Ukraine to build more of its own military equipment. Ukraine's domestic defense industry is growing rapidly, now producing nearly 90% of newly approved military systems.

Meanwhile, Russia faces mounting challenges. Fuel production has been disrupted, vehicle losses remain extraordinarily high, Moscow is expanding drone defenses, and even annual military events are being canceled because of security concerns.

Ukraine struck the Moscow oil refinery overnight on June 16, damaging a primary crude oil processing unit at one of Russia's largest and most strategically important refineries, a facility that supplies roughly 35 to 40 percent of the fuel consumed in Moscow and the surrounding region. The video explains why the strike matters beyond symbolism: it penetrated heavily defended Moscow airspace, hit an oil target tied directly to Russia's fuel supply, and comes as fuel shortages are already spreading through Crimea, Krasnodar, Moscow, and St. Petersburg. Trump is claiming a breakthrough deal with Iran: a ceasefire, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, ending the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports, oil moving again, and continued talks over Iran’s nuclear program. On the surface, that sounds like a win.

But the reported terms raise serious concerns. If Iran gets sanctions relief, access to frozen assets, restored oil sales, and a chance to claim victory while offering only future nuclear negotiations, this may not be peace. It may be a bailout.

Putin and Zelensky Are Both Fighting for Trump's Ear

Zelensky called Trump with praise, strategy, and a push for stronger air defense. Russia launched a massive overnight attack on Ukraine with 611 drones and 70 missiles, targeting Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, and other regions. The video breaks down the numbers, including the high drone interception rate, the weaker ballistic missile interception rate, and the predicted missile buildup that pointed toward a strike of roughly this size. The attack damaged cultural sites including the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, the Dovzhenko Film Studio, the Mystetskyi Arsenal, the Kharkiv art museum, residential neighborhoods, and other locations.

The update also explains why the strike fits Russia's broader problem: Moscow is struggling on the battlefield and under pressure from Ukrainian long-range strikes, so it uses mass attacks to project strength and terrorize civilians.
