Thousands of Boy Scouts pour into Fayette County for Jamboree…WV State Parks needs your help in studying fireflies…and WV identifies 11 projects for ARC funding---on today’s daily 304.

#1 – From METRO NEWS – Leaders of the Boy Scouts of America have welcomed more than 15,000 scouts from all over the United States to the hills of Fayette County for the last two weeks of July. 

“Every one of our Jamborees is a different opportunity to showcase West Virginia and showcase to the country what is happening here,” said Tom Pendleton, Director of the National Scout Jamboree.

The Summit Bechtel Reserve opened in 2013. It played host to a National Jamboree in 2017 and the World Scout Jamboree in 2019. During those 10 years since the Summit opened, development has grown and a lot of permanent infrastructure has been put into place to welcome scouts and provide a world class experience in the hills of West Virginia.

“We’ve got one of the largest skateboard parks in the world, one of the largest shooting ranges in the world, and we’ve got more zip lines than anywhere. It’s a phenomenal place for young people to test themselves and challenge themselves,” said Tico Perez, Chairman of the National Jamboree.

#3 – From WV EXPLORER – West Virginia has recommended more than $18 million in Appalachian Regional Commission grant funding for 11 projects — chiefly those that improve water and sewerage infrastructure.

“These upgrades are going to be phenomenal, and we really appreciate the Appalachian Regional Commission for giving us the ability to recommend and give these grants to these communities throughout West Virginia,” Gov. Jim Justice said.

“These projects will not only address many of our community and economic development needs in the state but also take advantage of our assets so that we can continue to grow our economy.”

The Appalachian Regional Commission is an economic development partnership agency of the federal government and 13 state governments across the Appalachian region. It aims to innovate, partner, and invest in building community capacity and strengthening economic growth in Appalachia.

#1 – From WVDNR – Spring and summer brings an influx of baby wildlife in West Virginia. While the sight of wildlife can certainly be exciting, the WVDNR wants to remind people that picking up, touching or even getting close to wildlife can harm the animal.

“When you touch or approach young animals, you leave behind scent that predators may key in on, which brings risk to that young animal,” said Vinnie Johnson, a wildlife biologist for the WVDNR. “Watching these young animals can be an enjoyable pastime, but WVDNR recommends this be done from a distance with the use of binoculars.”

A lone fawn may look abandoned, but most likely its mother is grazing nearby and will return to collect her baby, DNR officers advise. 

The handling of wildlife also can increase the risk of transmitting rabies, roundworms or other parasites, such as ticks, to the person handling the animal. It is also illegal to possess wildlife without a permit. Fines for the unlawful possession of a bear cub, fawn, squirrel, bird or any other animal ranges from $20 up to $300 and/or 10 to 100 days in jail.

#3 – From WV EXECUTIVE – Only two weeks remain until Buckhannon’s World Association of Marching Show Bands 2023 Championships and 20 bands from around the world have finalized plans to come together on the American stage while two others are navigating the visa process.

The WAMSB 2023 competition will take place July 17-24 and bands will compete for the title of world champion in several disciplines of music including concert, field marching performance, drumline, street parade and more. 

The week will feature entertainment, vendors and more throughout downtown Buckhannon. Grammy award winner Lee Greenwood of “God Bless the U.S.A.” fame will perform as part of the official opening ceremonies on July 19 and the Parade of Nations on July 22 will have more international representation than any other parade in West Virginia this year, officials say. The acclaimed U.S. Marine Drumline and Bugle Corps will perform for the official closing ceremony at 7 p.m. July 23.

Boy Scouts partner with WV State Parks to complete service projects…Just when you thought you knew WV, check out some unique attractions that will take you to another country…and, help improve broadband in the state--take a short survey…on today’s daily304.

#1 – From WVPB – Boy Scouts from the Buckskin Council in southern West Virginia will have the unique opportunity to camp for free in designated state parks. In exchange, the scouts will complete service projects in the parks.

West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Director Brett McMillion said scouts have already helped with the newest Almost Heaven swing at Pipestem Resort State Park.

“Some of the more popular projects will relate to trails, whether it be new trail construction, upgrades to existing or even basic maintenance on trails,” McMillion said. “There will likely be some facility upgrades or renovations, such as painting.”

McMillion said scouts can be a resource for smaller parks that may not have the bigger budgets. He said the DNR is already in contact with other scout councils from across West Virginia to expand the program.
