State officials say broadband expansion is moving right along…Native son Brad Paisley returns to WV to film a music video…and WVU Tech partners with Belle Chemical to bring real-world experiences to students…on today’s daily304.

#1 – From METRO NEWS – West Virginia development officials have been focusing on expanding broadband internet service through a range of resources, according to Development Secretary Mitch Carmichael.

“The higher percentage of connections we have, the more we will have. It’ll begin to expand and expand upon itself,” Carmichael said, describing momentum for availability and interest.

He said American Rescue Plan Act funds have gone toward funding 24 projects in 38 West Virginia counties.

That accounts for more than 3,000 miles of infrastructure. “Three thousand miles of fiber,” he said. “That stuff is not cheap to put on poles.”

Kelly Workman, director of the state Office of Broadband, agreed that “we are in full swing with our ARPA funding.”

She said three of the 24 total projects funded have already been completed within the past year. That accounts for 79 miles of fiber.

#2 – From THE REGISTER-HERALD – Country megastar and West Virginia native Brad Paisley returned to his home state recently to film a music video.

Paisley, a native of Glen Dale in the Northern Panhandle, spent last week at several sites in Fayette and Raleigh counties, including the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, where he recorded a music video inside the mine.

It was the first time anyone on his crew, including Paisley, who also brought his father, had been inside a West Virginia coal mine.

“It's so gratifying to see that happen more and more, that people are so interested in what we do,” said Leslie Baker, director of Beckley Parks and Recreation. “They are open to the new information that they're going to receive because we truly find out, just like with Brad, who's a native son, had never been underground before. Did not know what to expect and then, when the miners talked to him, was just awestruck by the effort that West Virginia miners and other Appalachian miners have made over the years to the prosperity of this country.”

Paisley’s new album, “Sons of the Mountains,” is due out later this year.

#3 – From LOOTPRESS –  West Virginia University Institute of Technology and Cornerstone/Belle Chemical Company have partnered to bring real-world experiences and applications to Tech students. This year, the partnership has allowed students to collaborate with engineers and employees from Cornerstone/Belle Chemical for design and capstone projects.

“The partnership between Cornerstone/Belle Chemical and the WVU Tech chemical engineering department offers students a chance to gain valuable experience working on projects that real companies face,” said Dr. Nathan Galinsky, Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at WVU Tech. “Students also appreciate being able to work on something tangible by understanding a company’s goal and how the project can impact the company side.”

Katy Jackson, a Senior Sustainability Engineer at Cornerstone Chemical Company, is looking into the potential of pursuing a biodiesel process for two of Cornerstone’s manufacturing facilities to increase its use of renewable energy and reduce its overall carbon footprint. This process can be added onsite to either the Belle Chemical Company location in Belle or the Cornerstone Chemical Company location in Waggaman, Louisiana.

Three other WVU Tech students in their senior year are designing a process to produce dimethylethanolamine (DEMA) to help meet the expected growth in the demand for this chemical for their senior capstone project.

#2 – From WV TOURISM –  West Virginia has a slew of wild, wonderfully named towns crammed into every nook and cranny of the state. Some of these towns have a clearly recorded history, while many others have been lost to folklore.

A few of the most unique West Virginia town names have unclear histories: Booger Hole, Hoo Hoo, Looneyville, Brohard, Peewee, Cucumber, Left Hand, Burnt House, Lego, Sassafrass, Kitchen and Scrabble. 

But for those town names we do know the stories behind, some of the histories are just as colorful as the names themselves. For example, the Summers County community of Jumping Branch was named by settlers who entered the area using a fallen log across a creek.

#3 – From WOWK-TV – A piece of Charleston’s history is being transformed into new downtown apartments. The Charmco Building, constructed in 1914, overlooks GoMart Ballpark.

“From what I’ve seen so far, obviously we’re here every day, it appears they’re trying to save the initial structure,” General Manager of Charleston’s Dirty Birds Jeremy Taylor said. “They’ve taken a big, long garage off the side of it and the back of the building off, and it seems now they’ve moved inside the side of the building to work on that.”  

The plan is to create a mix of studio, one bedroom and two-bedroom apartments in the former mill.

Taylor said he thinks the reconstruction is a great way to invite more people to the ballpark and to some of the other venues in downtown Charleston.

“Everybody had big, bright ideas for it. To me, it’s a positive because I like to see more people living downtown,” Taylor said.

Possibilitarian Sarah Moomau sees the promise of tourism in Grant County…Morgantown Chef Nate Meadows’ love for cooking began as a toddler…and Mason County officials predict massive economic boom from the NUCOR steel mill--#YesWV…on today’s daily304.

The longtime owner of the Fort Hill Motel loves talking up her hometown of Petersburg and the surrounding area. Through her post at the motel and involvement with organizations like the convention and visitors bureau, the local historical society, the chamber of commerce, and more, Moomau thrives as a champion of her community.

She thinks that towns like Petersburg are ripe for folks itching to make a change, and she urges anyone who wants to transform their own hometown to immerse themselves in a network like she has and pitch in wherever they can to help others succeed. “Never give up. With a lot of these projects, it takes a long time to develop them and find funding to make that happen,” she says. “If you see something that needs to happen in a small town, you have that network and that support from family and friends so that you figure out a way to do it.”

#2 – From TASTE WV – “Some say, I got into cooking before I have any memory of it,” said Nate Meadows, executive chef at Bourbon Prime & Morgantown Event Center in Morgantown.

“There is a particular photo of me standing on a stool in my mother’s kitchen helping her make Christmas cookies. I couldn’t have even been 3 years old, and have no memory of it. To this day however, making Christmas cookies remains a diehard tradition in her and also my family’s kitchen.”

Those holiday experiences set the foundation for a lifetime of cooking for the award-winning, Morgantown-based chef.

Meadows has worked in a number of local eateries preparing everything from charcuterie to pizza before landing the executive chef role at one of the city’s premier restaurants.

“The menu we have built [at Bourbon Prime], currently contains recipes you might find from South America all the way to Japan. The dishes we prepare at Bourbon Prime are done in a way that are not intimidating but also exciting … You can currently get anything from Braised Short Rib Pot Roast, to Seared Ahi Tuna with Furikake, to Nashville Chicken Mac n’ Cheese,” he said.

#3 – From WV Public – Mason County leaders predict the business growth coming with the massive steel mill on the way will be life-changing. NUCOR corporate leaders say their $3 billion steel mill will need 2,000 construction workers to build and 800 teammates to operate.

John Musgrave, executive director of the Mason County Development Authority, said the demand for land increases by the day. One out-of-state housing construction company has already purchased 20 acres for an upscale subdivision. And state and local contractors are already working on several middle income housing projects.

Musgrave said his office is having conversations with numerous retail businesses considering coming to Mason County. He said the highlighted plan for retail business development includes revamping the declining small town of Henderson, just across the Kanawha River from Point Pleasant, into a hub of commerce.

“We’ll bring in box stores, restaurants, hotels. It will be an ideal location for any major given company that we’d want to deal with,” he said.

#3 – From THE REGISTER-HERALD – A German company that set up shop in Raleigh County more than 20 years ago is now looking to invest $18 million to expand its plant and bring in about 80 new jobs.

Raleigh County commissioners gave the green light to start the process of assisting Klöckner Pentaplast, a plastic manufacturer, in financing an $18 million expansion at its Beaver, W.Va., plant. The facility produces plastic packaging including clamshells for fruit and battery packaging.

In 2019, Klöckner Pentaplast’s Beaver facility was the company’s most productive site.

Jina Belcher, executive director of the New River Gorge Regional Development Authority, Belcher said the company’s goal with the expansion is to make the Beaver facility its "North American food hub facility.”

As part of the expansion, Klöckner Pentaplast will be looking to use its Raleigh County facility to manufacture other products, including food grade protein packaging for hamburgers, chicken and other proteins.

“Watters Smith Memorial State Park was given to the state by Burr Smith upon his passing in 1947,” according to Andy Bennett, park superintendent. “Mr. Smith realized that mechanization and improvements in agriculture would shape rural life in West Virginia, essentially leading to less family farms. And from that, he felt his family history must be preserved.
