After its birth as a new state, West Virginia created the Regency of Normal Schools, a 19th century concept in which these schools provided a secondary education and perhaps just a bit more. Eventually the schools were turned into teacher’s colleges and by the 20th century all of them became traditional colleges. Today the five of them—Concord, Fairmont State, Glenville State, Shepherd, and West Liberty—have become universities and maintain the state’s educational system, affording West Virginians and people from around the world, the education they deserve.
