The Charleston Sternwheel Regatta’s entertainment lineup is set; mark your calendars for a fun-filled weekend of music and other events…four CVBs partner up to launch the Pepperoni Roll Trail in north-central West Virginia…take a peek into West Virginia’s colorful past via The History Project…on today’s daily304.

#1 – From METRO NEWS – Officials have announced the lineup for the 2025 Charleston Sternwheel Regatta.

Headlining performances this summer will include country music artist Carly Pearce, disco and funk band KC and the Sunshine Band, rapper Busta Rhymes, and rock band Jefferson Starship.

This year’s regatta will take place July 3-6 along Charleston’s riverfront. Additional fun-filled events planned over the weekend include a youth BBQ Challenge, an all-dog costume contest and wiener dog races, the Firecracker 5K and a classic car show.

Charleston Mayor Goodwin said that since the regatta was brought back in 2022, it has grown to become the biggest event in the state.

#2 – From WV NEWS – Four visitors bureaus in North Central West Virginia have partnered to launch a digital trail celebrating the state’s iconic pepperoni roll.

The Clarksburg Visitors Center and Marion County Convention and Visitors Bureau introduced the West Virginia Pepperoni Roll Trail through a digital passport system, which allows users to check in at various locations and earn points to collect prizes. Organizers then expanded the trail through partnerships with Visit Upshur County and the Bridgeport Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The trail includes well-known bakeries like Colasessano’s and unique creations like the ramp-infused “ramperoni roll” at The Donut Spot. Visitors can earn double points by attending The Great Pepperoni Roll Drop, held in Mannington on New Year’s Eve.

Located on the second floor of the B&O Building in Wheeling, students can now obtain an associate degree in applied science in just two years. Programs include business administration, small business management, accounting, and more in a new way.

WVNCC Business Program Director Lyndsie Scott Guzek said it’s putting the Ohio Valley on the map by giving students hands-on skills to become entrepreneurs or run small businesses or business administration.

#2 – From WV NEWS –   The operations of North Central West Virginia Airport will transition to a new, multimillion terminal building in just a few months.

The state-of-the-art, 50,000-square-foot facility is the result of seven years of planning and the support of numerous stakeholders, said Harrison County Commissioner David Hinkle, who also serves as president of the Benedum Airport Authority — the airport’s governing board.

The facility features an expanded taxiway, an enlarged parking lot and is surrounded by ample build-ready land for future projects. It is slated to open to the public this summer.

“We’re going to be able to handle 100,000 passengers,” Hinkle said. “We have tried to build for the future, and I think we’ve done a great job at it.”

Spring wildflowers are popping up all over, and there’s no better place to enjoy them than West Virginia state parks…Culinary arts students capitalize on tourism trends…and the West Virginia Entrepreneurship Ecosystem connects entrepreneurs with valuable resources…on today’s daily304.

#1 – From NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC –  Few things announce the arrival of spring as much as wildflowers, so what better way to take in the glory of the season than a hike through wildflower-filled fields? 

An hour southwest of Charleston, West Virginia, Chief Logan State Park welcomes visitors with 4,000 acres of parkland full of mountains, forest, lakes, rivers, campgrounds, and historical sites. For more than 40 years, the park has hosted a wildflower where park experts lead wildflower seekers on group hikes.

When spring hits full bloom (typically between April and May), more than 100 different species of wildflowers can be found in the park, including violet larkspur and Dutchman’s breeches.

#2 – From WV NEWS – State research predicts more than 21,000 tourism and hospitality job opportunities will open up annually over the next five years.

Stakeholders in this flourishing field include everyone from students at a culinary arts kitchen to employees at a visitors center working to attract tourists to the Mountain State.

At Mountwest Community and Technical College’s Center for Culinary Arts, Program Director Chef Lawerence Perry said the fully equipped kitchens are working labs that teach students to prepare dishes at restaurant venues of all sorts. Perry said his students can go wherever their passions take them, but are encouraged to make menu choices come alive in the Mountain State.

Mountwest’s Culinary Arts program blends in-class lecture theory, hands-on application and in-field lab practicum placement. These teaching methods ensure graduates are equipped with well-rounded expertise in knife skills and food production, classic baking and pastry techniques and restaurant and culinary operations management.

Preston County joins the West Virginia Statewide Farm Crawl set for July…drone use benefits the state’s agriculture industry…and, speaking of agriculture, this industry generates nearly a billion dollars for the economy in #YesWV…on today’s daily304.

#1 – From WV NEWS – Last year, a variety of local Preston County farms banded together for the annual Preston County Farm Crawl. This year, the farmers will join a larger, statewide initiative.

The 2025 West Virginia Statewide Farm Crawl takes place each weekend in July. During this time, different farms across West Virginia will open their gates to visitors, offering unique experiences, tours and a chance to purchase fresh, local products.

Elizabeth Riffle, owner of Riffle Farms and former creative director of the Preston County Farm Crawl, said the concept of farm crawls has become very popular.

“I am glad that the farm crawl was successful enough and garnered enough attention that the state wants to promote it and help advertise it across the state,” she said.

#2 – From WV NEWS – In recent years, radar technology has advanced to the point that drones can fly autonomously without crashing into terrain or other obstacles.

This has led to a rise in drone use for agricultural purposes in West Virginia, where the topography is often too steep for helicopters, crop dusters and tractors.

Over the last decade or so, drones have been steadily replacing helicopter and crop dusters across the country. Current radar technology allows drones to navigate West Virginia’s hills while remaining a set height above vegetation to mitigate the chance of a crash.

#3 – From GAZETTE-MAIL – After spending its first 22 years working to restore and protect the Coal River system, the Coal River Group is now setting its sights on promoting tourism in the five-county corridor through which the 88-mile Coal River system passes.

“We’re transitioning from being primarily a fix-it group to a tourism development organization,” said Coal River Group co-founder and board chairman Bill Currey of St. Albans. “The river’s changed dramatically for the better in the past 22 years. It’s been exciting to see all the positive things that have happened to it. Now, it’s time to take on a new challenge.”

The group has led the effort to build 20 public stream access sites along the river system and mapped out a water trail connecting them. They also placed historic markers and signage at the former locks site used by barges and steamboats to haul coal prior to the Civil War.

Today, more than 15,000 paddlers, most of them kayakers, ply the waters of the Coal River system every year.

The event features tours, speakers, demonstrations, and educational sessions designed to help community leaders, preservation professionals, and owners of historic properties.

Danielle Parker, executive director of the organization, said the 2025 event will feature more tours, speakers, and demonstrations than in the past and is being expanded to help the increasing number of owners of historic properties.

“People are investing in historic properties in West Virginia at a greater rate than ever before," Parker said. "With this in mind, we're gearing up the conference to provide them all the resources and contacts we can.”

#2 – From WV DED – West Virginia is one of the fastest growing in-bound states, and the demand for new, residential properties has never been higher.

The BUILD WV Act aims to assist West Virginia’s growing communities in attracting much-needed housing development projects. The credit offers a state sales and use tax exemption for building materials and a 10-year property value adjustment refundable tax credit to offset building costs.

#3 – From WVDNR – The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources has announced the completion of a new public boat ramp in Clendenin, which will expand access to the lower Elk River and improve recreational opportunities for anglers and boaters.

The $800,000 construction project was a partnership between the WVDNR and the Town of Clendenin, which owns the property and has committed to maintaining and operating the ramp along with two additional access sites within town limits. 

The new boat ramp, located at Virginia Avenue, is one of six newly completed public access points on the lower Elk River and creates more opportunities for anglers and paddlers to customize their trips and experience the river’s scenic beauty.
