#3 – From WVDNR – The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources has announced plans to conduct a trout harvest rate study during the 2025 spring and fall trout stocking seasons. The study will help biologists better understand how long trout stay in stocked streams, how they move over time, and whether they survive through the summer.

As part of this effort, WVDNR hatchery staff will be releasing rainbow and golden rainbow trout marked with unique numbered blue tags into waters around the state. Anglers who catch a tagged trout are asked to clip off the tag and report it using the contact information printed on it. Those who participate in the study will receive a gift card up to $100.

Anglers may keep or release the fish after removing the tag. If a fish has more than one tag, all tags should be removed and reported.

Plan a spring hike in Almost Heaven--WV Tourism suggests a few trails you might want to check out…the Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center offers hands-on training to help you get started on your manufacturing career…and the newly formed Appalachian Outlaw Trails promote ATV tourism in the Upper Kanawha Valley…on today’s daily304.

#1 – From WV TOURISM – You might have heard about the stunning views in West Virginia, but you really have to be here to believe it. From scenic cliffside views to trails stretching deep into the serene forests, Almost Heaven makes every step worth the journey.

Make spring your new favorite season and explore some amazing hiking trails, like the Seneca Rocks Trail in the Spruce Knob – Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area that features beautiful views of the Potomac River.

For an easier hike there’s the Cranberry Bog Boardwalk near Hillsboro, which takes you through a unique ecosystem and in April and May reveals colorful wildflowers.

#2 – From MAMC – Interested in starting or advancing a career in manufacturing? Do you need to train company employees? The Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center has been helping develop West Virginia’s workforce for more than three decades and has the training and course options to meet any need.

Career Skills feature formal hands-on training opportunities in machining and welding. The technical skills students learn from hands-on training at the Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center (formerly RCBI) make it possible for them to enter a shop floor setting and begin work immediately. 

MAMC also offers free CNC (computer-numerical-control) bootcamps for individuals of all skill levels – or no experience at all. Receive free online instruction and hands-on, in-person training in the operation of computerized mills and lathes at the Center’s Advanced Manufacturing Technology facilities in either Huntington or South Charleston.

#3 – From GAZETTE-MAIL – Like many residents of the Upper Kanawha Valley, Chris Inghram and Eric Larch grew up riding off-road vehicles on the property across from Riverside High School.

Most of the land was privately owned by coal companies, however, and as ridership increased during the pandemic, they began gating off the property.

Ingraham and Larch then decided to go the legal route to ensure that ATVers had a place to ride, and that’s how the idea of Appalachian Outlaw Trails began. Through AOT, the two men hope to preserve trail access sustainably and boost the economy of the Upper Kanawha Valley through tourism.

The first phase, slated to open in 2026, will have 50 to 75 miles of trails, a welcome center, a 10-mile racecourse for events and campsites for primitive and RV camping.

April is the month of the military child--learn how your school can earn a Purple Star Award by addressing the unique needs of military children…Check out seven great reasons to visit Buckhannon, home of the WV Strawberry Festival…and if you’re looking to go into the childcare  business, the WV SBDC has some valuable resources for you…on today’s daily304.

#1 – From WV VETERANS ASSISTANCE – April is designated the Month of the Military Child in recognition of the unique challenges and triumphs military children face. 

The West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance has partnered with the West Virginia Department of Education to issue Purple Star Awards to schools that address the unique needs of military children. 

School representatives who have sought out and implemented the Purple Star Award requirements have indicated that they felt empowered to improve the well-being of military-connected students in numerous ways, including academically, socially, emotionally, or physically. 

Here in the Mountain State, 297 schools have earned a Purple Star Award recognizing their commitment to support military children and their families and 16 districts have qualified to receive the award.

The WV DEP is seeking volunteers for its annual Adopt-A-Highway Statewide Spring Cleanup on April 26…Runners, mark your calendar for the brand-new UC Marathon coming to Charleston next April…and do you want to make a difference in your community? #1 – From WV NEWS – The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection is accepting registrations for the 2025 Adopt-A-Highway Spring Statewide Cleanup, scheduled for Saturday, April 26. 

Organized through the WVDEP’s Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan and co-sponsored by the West Virginia Division of Highways, the Adopt-A-Highway program aims to reduce roadside litter while encouraging civic engagement. Volunteers from all walks of life—including individuals, families, schools, local organizations, and businesses—are encouraged to participate.

Participants can sign up to clean nearly any state-maintained road, including back roads and major routes. Volunteers receive free cleanup supplies, including garbage bags, gloves, and safety vests, while WVDEP handles the proper disposal of the collected litter.

#2 – From WCHS-TV – Charleston is partnering with University of Charleston to host its longest-distance run yet.

The UC Marathon will be the first marathon the Capitol City has held in nearly 30 years. The race, debuting in April of next year, will feature a fast and flat 26.2 mile course through the city’s most popular locations, including the downtown area, the historic Elk City district, Kanawha City, and UC’s scenic riverfront campus.

UC Honors College students will be in charge of planning, promoting, and executing next April’s marathon. The race. All proceeds are expected to go directly to the support of the Honors College and help fund future scholar and leadership opportunities for them.

USA Cycling’s Pro Road National Championships are returning to Charleston next month and city officials are looking for volunteers…WV Living and WVU Medicine Children’s want to shine a light on West Virginia’s most incredible kids--nominate an incredible kid today…and the WVDNR offers tips for avoiding human-bear conflicts…on today’s daily304.

#1 – From METRO NEWS – With the expansion of this year’s USA Cycling championship races in the Capitol City comes a need for more volunteers.

The Pro Road National Championships are set for May 19 -26 in Charleston this year, two days longer than the national cycling event’s debut in the city last year. Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau President Tim Brady said they are looking for about 100 more volunteers to serve as course marshals.

Course marshals serve a key role in keeping both race participants and spectators safe. They monitor crowds along race routes to reduce risks to cyclists, provide rapid communication relating to any hazards that may arise, serve as a crossing guard along roadways operating as race courses, and act as an ambassador to spectators regarding event details.

Volunteers will receive a whistle and a branded volunteer shirt. All shifts are provided with a meal and water.

#3 – From WVDNR – Black bears are a beloved part of West Virginia’s cultural identity and a vital member of the state’s mountain and forest ecosystems. As the state animal, black bears symbolize West Virginia’s wild beauty and resilience. 

However, as their population expands and human activity continues to grow, encounters between people and black bears are becoming more common—especially when black bears are drawn to easy food sources. The good news is that most conflicts can be prevented. By learning a few basics, you can help keep black bears wild and communities safe.

Visit Southern West Virginia launches a mobile passport to the New River Gorge…as West Virginia shifts to diversify its economy, its manufacturing base expands…and #YesWV partners with Jobcase to offer a free platform for local employers to post job opportunities…on today’s daily304.

#1 – From WV NEWS – Locals and tourists alike have a new way to explore some of West Virginia’s most scenic and historic destinations with the launch of Visit Southern West Virginia’s New River Gorge, Beckley & Beyond Passport.

The digital passport highlights 25 locations throughout Raleigh, Fayette and Nicholas counties and features a mix of outdoor adventure spots, cultural attractions and small-town charm. Some destinations, are also part of the West Virginia Waterfall Trail, allowing travelers to log visits on both trails with a single stop.

Visitors use their mobile devices to check in at each location and earn points, which can then be redeemed for prizes.

#2 – From WV NEWS – West Virginia has historically been a powerhouse of energy production, with coal, oil and natural gas playing a central role in the state’s economy.

However, in recent decades, the state has shifted its focus toward diversifying its economic base. One of the most significant areas of growth has been in manufacturing, where West Virginia now boasts a wide range of industries — from chemicals and automotive to metal products and wood manufacturing.

Staci Miller, director of the West Virginia University Industrial Extension, said West Virginia manufacturers are in constant pursuit of improvements in operations and development of their workforce.

The state has had a number of high-profile manufacturing investments in recent years including Nucor Steel and GreenPower Motor Company.

Annually, manufacturing adds more than $8.8 billion in value to the state’s economy, according to data from the National Association of Manufacturers. More than 1,000 separate manufacturing businesses in the state employ more than 47,300 workers.

The Charleston Sternwheel Regatta’s entertainment lineup is set; mark your calendars for a fun-filled weekend of music and other events…four CVBs partner up to launch the Pepperoni Roll Trail in north-central West Virginia…take a peek into West Virginia’s colorful past via The History Project…on today’s daily304.

#1 – From METRO NEWS – Officials have announced the lineup for the 2025 Charleston Sternwheel Regatta.

Headlining performances this summer will include country music artist Carly Pearce, disco and funk band KC and the Sunshine Band, rapper Busta Rhymes, and rock band Jefferson Starship.

This year’s regatta will take place July 3-6 along Charleston’s riverfront. Additional fun-filled events planned over the weekend include a youth BBQ Challenge, an all-dog costume contest and wiener dog races, the Firecracker 5K and a classic car show.

Charleston Mayor Goodwin said that since the regatta was brought back in 2022, it has grown to become the biggest event in the state.

#2 – From WV NEWS – Four visitors bureaus in North Central West Virginia have partnered to launch a digital trail celebrating the state’s iconic pepperoni roll.

The Clarksburg Visitors Center and Marion County Convention and Visitors Bureau introduced the West Virginia Pepperoni Roll Trail through a digital passport system, which allows users to check in at various locations and earn points to collect prizes. Organizers then expanded the trail through partnerships with Visit Upshur County and the Bridgeport Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The trail includes well-known bakeries like Colasessano’s and unique creations like the ramp-infused “ramperoni roll” at The Donut Spot. Visitors can earn double points by attending The Great Pepperoni Roll Drop, held in Mannington on New Year’s Eve.

#2 – From WTOV9-TV – West Virginia Northern Community College has opened its new Business and Entrepreneurship Center.

Located on the second floor of the B&O Building in Wheeling, students can now obtain an associate degree in applied science in just two years. Programs include business administration, small business management, accounting, and more in a new way.

WVNCC Business Program Director Lyndsie Scott Guzek said it’s putting the Ohio Valley on the map by giving students hands-on skills to become entrepreneurs or run small businesses or business administration.
