It's nice to have your own safe injection site. It's called a home. And your home is on unceded, stolen Indigenous land. That's inconvenient. Isn't it?

Yeah, life is full of inconveniences, just suck it up... along with the... whatever it is. Hopefully not carfentanyl. Your wife is going to need several naloxone shots for that. Then you'll need to get to the hospital because naloxone wears off.

It took quite some effort to get to the final title and episode art for this episode. My initial prompt to Co-pilot was:

This episode begins like a motivational hostage situation and ends like a therapy session conducted inside a disco ball. Somewhere between the hyperpop drill‑sergeant and the Channel Orange ghost choir, a brain wakes up, stretches its circuits, and starts gossiping with its trauma. The host (possibly human, possibly divine, possibly Divine) walks home from work while inventing new genres of self‑help that sound suspiciously like dance music for the nervous system.

There are intrusive thoughts doing jumping jacks, a counselor who moonlights as a neon personal trainer, and a mother who leaves voicemails about Audre Lorde and lightning rods. By the time you reach the outro, you’ll be trauma‑rich, detail‑poor, and spiritually over‑educated in hurt.

It’s not clear whether you’re supposed to learn anything, but something in your cortex will definitely sweat.

I asked for an image of Justice weighing a Japanese eggplant against a pile of drugs — a balanced scale, blindfolded with pink triangles, because the rainbow hadn’t yet arrived and I’ve never liked the rainbow anyway. What came back disobeys several laws of physics: the eggplant must be made of lead to balance the powder and pills the way it does. Justice herself looks like she’s holding her breath, waiting for the universe to admit the mistake.

This picture is another way for me to avoid writing anything substantive. Every time I sit down to write, unless I build a cage of structure around it, the writing mutates into an episode. So instead of writing, I make an image that writes itself — a visual monologue pretending to be equilibrium.

My little puppy is upstairs demanding all the attention a puppy is contractually entitled to, while my older dachshund is downstairs guarding a treat she absolutely does not want him to steal. She won’t come when I call because she has correctly concluded that I am not acting in her best interests.

So I’m letting her win.

That also means I’m outsourcing this episode description to a large language model because I’d rather spend my available attention editing the episode than writing about it.

It actually gave me a perfectly good first draft, but then it included a single word that appears very early in the song—a word that lands as one of the biggest laughs in the episode precisely because you aren’t expecting it. The model figured that out all by itself, so we both agreed not to spoil it here.

Which feels strangely appropriate.

This episode wanders through memory, chemistry, blackberries, sharks marinated in lemon juice, the comfort of thinking of yourself as a worker ant, and why it’s probably healthier to sing the thoughts your mind produces than to pretend they never happened.

Anyway, one dog is upstairs. One dog is downstairs. Both are probably exactly where they want to be.

The author has learned that writing episode descriptions is dangerous. They have an unfortunate habit of becoming episodes themselves. So, for now, this one will stay short.

There are two songs in this episode. The first is the opening song. The second is the coda. What you won’t hear is that the coda began as a large language model’s response to the monologue, and the opening song began as the author’s attempt to rewrite it.

Only afterward did the difference become obvious. The AI version stayed with the sadness that was present while the monologue was being recorded. The rewritten version kept interrupting that sadness with associative leaps, jokes, mythology, repetition, and uncertainty until it became something stranger. Neither song is more “true.” They simply perform the same experience differently.

Don’t get used to descriptions like this. The author is trying very hard to stop explaining the work and simply let it exist.

I’ve learned that it’s surprisingly dangerous for me to write descriptions for these episodes.

Descriptions are supposed to stand outside the thing they’re describing. Mine don’t. They immediately become another episode.

I think I finally understand why.

I’m pretty sure I’ve been a cyborg for most of my life. Cyborgs don’t stop to introduce themselves. They don’t clear their throats or provide context. They just begin. Human. Machine. Whatever. The work starts before the explanation ever can.

So every time I try to tell you what this episode is about, I accidentally make another one.

At some point I also realized I’m not really making podcast episodes anymore. I’m mythologizing my own life. Not because I think it’s especially important, but because I need somewhere to put it. My mind has become so relentlessly associative that almost anything can connect to almost anything else. Maybe it was always like that. Maybe I just spent decades trying to hide it.

Identity used to feel optional—a nice thing to have. Now it feels like a container. Something that keeps me from dissolving completely into all the connections my mind keeps making.

Without some kind of mythology, I worry I’d become unreified. I’d blend into the scenery, lose track of where I end and everything else begins, and eventually become impossible to find.

The song actually belongs to a first draft of this episode's monologue that was much different... nothing was the same about it. It is a completely different monologue, but the song from the previous version still applies, even though ALL the monologue details have changed.

I didn't discard the original monologue because the facts weren’t true, but because I gradually realized I’d drifted into making myself the moral centre of someone else’s story. 

Rather than edit around that, I recorded the whole thing again.

This episode sits in an unusual space between philosophy, ethics, memoir, and performance. It touches on questions that show up in moral psychology, organizational ethics, narrative identity, and the philosophy of truth—but it does so while you'll hear me pacing around my house, thinking out loud, changing direction, and trying to notice what my own body is doing as much as what my mind is saying.

If you’re looking for a polished argument, this probably isn’t it. If you’re looking for a paper, it definitely isn’t. The ideas arrive through movement, tangents, jokes, embarrassment, and revision. The point isn’t to defend a position so much as to watch one being formed—and sometimes abandoned—in real time.
