According to the Platonic worldview, the human body is inherently bad, evil, temporal, imperfect, a source of imperfection, and therefore death is a friend, freeing us from the encumbrances of imperfection. In contrast, the Bible teaches that human bodies as part of the creation are good, and were originally in a state of perfection, and that death is a punishment and consequence for disobedience and an enemy to be thwarted by God. Join us as we examine the difference between how the Greek and Biblical worldviews understand human nature, and the implications for our understanding of the gospel. Unfortunately, there is a lot of unclear and disjointed teaching on the subject of the kingdom of God in the Body of Christ today. A close reading of Scripture shows that are at least four distinct yet interrelated senses in which the “kingdom of God” needs to be understood. There are texts that pertain to: a) the Kingdom of Creation; b) the Kingdom of Eden; c) the Kingdom of Israel; and d) the Kingdom of the Messiah, or the Messianic Kingdom. Again, these four are all dynamically interrelated, but failure to recognize their distinct nuances as outlined in Scripture can lead to great confusion concerning the nature of the gospel and Christian discipleship in this age. Throughout church history, there have been a number of different views concerning the nature of the kingdom of God, including: a) Kingdom=Messianic Government on the Earth; b) Kingdom = Church; c) Kingdom = Moral Ethic; d) Kingdom = Divine Reign, Already but Not Yet. All human societies and cultures operate from a set of unconscious assumptions that together constitute what anthropologists call a “worldview.” Of all cultural worldviews in human history, the Hellenistic worldview, or the worldview of the ancient Greeks, has exerted the greatest influence on Western societies, and through people like Origen, Clement, and St. Augustine, on the church as well. Typically, the worldview of every culture consists both of elements that agree with Biblical truth (and thus are to be affirmed) and those that do not agree with Biblical truth (and thus need to be changed from God’s perspective). The problem with the widespread infiltration of Greek thought into the church over the centuries is that so much of it is simply contrary to the Hebraic worldview of the Bible. Join in this introductory session as we examine the concepts of worldview and Christo-Platonism in an attempt to detoxify ourselves of unbiblical influences that have obscured “the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3) for too long.
