Danielle Spencer, beloved as Dee Thomas in the sitcom “What’s Happening!!,” died Aug. 11 at age 60 after a long battle with cancer. Known for her quick wit on screen, Spencer overcame immense personal challenges and later pursued a career as a veterinarian and animal welfare advocate. She was the first child star inducted into the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.
