When nature calls, you can’t put it on hold. Using the toilet is an essential part of being human. But having one is a privilege. In South Africa, thousands of people still have no access to proper sanitation. Worldwide, more than four billion face the same situation. Turning to buckets and pit latrines, they’re exposed to bacteria that leads to diarrhoea and waterborne diseases. When Ruan Coetzee saw kids in these circumstances, it broke his heart. So he set out to better their lives – starting with humble sheets of toilet paper.

Coetzee is the pioneer of Güdsheet, toilet paper designed to change the plight of those who don’t have any. “Sanitation is a fundamental human right because it provides dignity and an improved quality of life,” he says. This includes water, ablution facilities, and cleaning products. Coetzee dedicates a portion of his profits to upgrading the sanitation in schools in the Eastern Cape. “Our mission is to provide a toilet for all,” he says.

In the spirit of the season, the general public is invited to participate in Hyde Park Corner's Love the Sounds initiative, by bringing their pre-loved musical instruments to be donated to the Music Enlightenment Project, a community-based NPO based in Braamfontein.

The initiative was founded in 2009 with the aim of creating a world where the lives of children and communities are enriched and transformed through the experience, practice and performance of music. Their holistic approach involves creating successful futures for children by developing not only their skills as musicians but also their life skills through music education.

Chanene Van As founded the Green Door Project, an after-school initiative to assist primary school girls who are at risk academically. With 18 years of teaching experience under her belt, Van As helps children discover and develop their talents.

Between four and five in the afternoon, they learn to use their time constructively by choosing from a range of creative classes and participating in environmental exercises such as recycling and gardening.

When Taryn Palacious started her business - The Bra Guru- she knew she would be servicing a community of women that needed it!What she didn't know was that she would also be giving back to 10,000 women in need!

Taryn has run her business for the last few years, chasing the lives of women who can afford to buy underwear and saw a massive need to service the community of women who can't afford it! She partnered with an incredible charity - Kindness like Confetti - to get 10,000 used bras together for ladies in need by the end of October (Breast Cancer Awareness Month)!

In a world where we are moving towards inclusivity or everyone, there is one mom, Joy Cronje, who is standing up for children with down syndrome, saying: "I feel like it's a group that people show prejudice against".

Joy's son, Brave, was diagnosed with Down syndrome at nine weeks old and with that came a host of complications, raging from sleep apnea to epilepsy. She talks about finding out, mourning the diagnosis and how Brave has taught her and her husband so much about themselves, like to "not sweat the small stuff"

I got to speak to him about his life and his journey from the first moment he decided he was going to become a doctor, to many years thereafter getting into medical school and everything that happened in between!

In the economic climate in South Africa and with more than half of the countries families living below the poverty line, sanitary towels are not high on the list of necessities. Often, not on the list at all.

I was blessed to recently meet the incredible Angela Yeung, owner of Impilo Collection and mom to a daughter who through her own struggles growing up, teamed up with a group of phenomenal women to climb Kilimanjaro twice to raise funds and awareness for the Caring For Girls charity!
