Almost twenty years ago I spent a year as assistant director to the Swedish actor, director and distinguished professor Keve Hjelm. He was an old school Stanislavski giant from the last century and his method was to completely surrender to the work and to the text. Simply put to work your ass off. Keve has influenced my work more than anyone I have ever met. Here I talk about one of the many things I have learned from him.

The Naked Actor Prepares is back with the second session in the series on Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. This session is dedicated to THE WORD!

The word is the most boiled-down entity that drives you (you the character - and indeed you yourself) through the story. It's what makes you get up in the morning, gets you moving all day, gets you to push through whatever challenge may come your way, makes you try, try and try again and it's the last thing on your mind before you fall asleep.

If you find that word and tap into it with what is happening to you yourself in your own personal life, as an actor and human being, you can play any scene, any situation, you can adapt to any script changes, you can play season after season in a tv-series. You know where everything comes from, every single movement and thought -and the audience knows too, and they will recognize themselves, they will know exactly what you are doing and why you are doing it, because you will mirror them. And there, deep down inside of us, we are all alike -characters, actors and audience - and we always have been since the beginning of time.

Our first series is about becoming Norman Bates from Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho.

In this first episode we will start from the very beginning, without going into any psychology, (however tempting that is) to get a better understanding for whom Norman Bates might be. We talk about the importance of Time and Space, within the Story, and how that influences your Performance. We will also do an exercise on how to find the specific, detailed, information you will need, to bring all of this research material to life later on. 

The hardest thing to do at this moment might actually be to hurry slowly...

All I'm saying is buckle up or buckle don't because we are ready to launch!
