  • Dark Discussions Podcast – Episode 551 – HALLOWEEN ENDS (2022)

Evil ends tonight!  That was the catch phrase of the second film in the David Gordon Green trilogy for the latest reboot of the Halloween film franchise.  This trilogy takes up with understanding only the original 1978 film would be used in continuity.  With the latest, HALLOWEEN ENDS (2022), the series begins its wrap up.  Is it really the end?  Whether it is or not, this is the film that is the finale of the last films.

A few years after the Michael Myers’ rampage of 2018, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her granddaughter Allyson Nelson (Andi Matichak) have settled down into as normal a suburban life they can.  When loner, Corey (Rohan Campbell), and Allyson find each other and begin to date, will the terror of Michael Myers once again return this coming Halloween night?

Directed by David Gordon Green, the movie was co-written by him along with Paul Brad Logan, Chris Bernier, and Danny McBride.  The film brings back Kyle Richards, Will Patton, and even Nick Castle (the original Michael Myers) makes a cameo.  Unfortunately for many, the critical response was not as highly anticipated as folks had hoped.  Dark Discussions Podcast takes a look at the movie and sees if concerns were warranted.

  • Halloween Boutique Psychotronic Reviews – Volume 042 – WEREWOLF BY NIGHT (2022)

As Disney digs further and further into the backlog of the Marvel properties that they purchased back in 2009, they’ve released shows about such characters as Black Panther, She-Hulk, and Moon Knight. As Halloween approaches in 2022, a one shot television special appeared on Disney+ called WEREWOLF BY NIGHT based off the comic book that first appeared in 1972. Using the old Universal Monster Movie production values, the show brought back nostalgia for what was a brand new episode in the Marvel Universe.

With the death of Ulysses Bloodstone, five monster hunters are called to the Bloodstone estate in hopes to find one of them worthy enough to inherit the talisman known as the Bloodstone. The powerful weapon would make them more powerful than most of the monsters they would be hunting. But there is a wrinkle. To claim the Bloodstone, the five must not only fight a monster, but they also may have fight each other.

Directed by Michael Giacchino and written by Heather Quinn and Peter Cameron, the show stars Gael Garcia Bernal, Laura Donnelly, among others. The episode premiered October 7, 2022 in preparation for Halloween. Your co-hosts take a look at this interesting inclusion to the Marvel Universe and the reintroduction to beloved characters from the past within the comic canon.

  • Dark Discussions Podcast – Episode 550 – INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1978)

It is the 550th episode of the Dark Discussions Podcast and as usual, we choose a "tent pole" film to discuss.  Like before, we placed a poll on the Facebook group where anyone could go vote for twelve different films for us to discuss (chosen each by our co-hosts).  With a close down-to-the-wire race, the winner was co-host Mike's choice - INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1978)

When health inspector Matthew’s (Donald Sutherland) co-worker Elizabeth (Brooke Adams) feels her fiancé seems different, the two discover a strange parasitic flower that they feel may be part of the problem.  As they join with their friends, the group begin to piece together things.  And as they work through the mystery, a wave of hysteria seems to sweep across their home city of San Francisco.

Considered a classic and one of the best remakes in film history, the movie brings an all-star cast that includes Donald Sutherland, Jeff Goldblum, Leonard Nimoy, Veronica Cartwright, and Brooke Adams.  Cameos from the original film include Don Siegel (the director of the 1956 movie) and leading man Kevin McCarthy.  The movie is directed by Philip Kaufman and written by W.D. Richter based off the original novel The Body Snatchers by Jack Finney.  Listen to the crew discuss this fantastic film

  • Dark Discussions Podcast - Episode 549 - BARBARIAN (2022)

Written and directed by Zach Cregger, the new film, BARBARIAN (2022), was released on September 9th, 2022 to general US audiences.  The movie received very favorable reviews by critics and went on to gross $35.8M USD against a budget of $4M USD.  With an interesting premise of a double booked AirBNB, the movie turns into something much different as it enters its second act.

Tess (Georgina Campbell) is in Detroit for a job interview.  When she arrives at her AirBNB, not only is she surprised that the neighborhood is rundown, but the house is already occupied by Keith (Bill Skarsgard).  With a convention in town and no rooms available anywhere, Tess has to decide whether to stay and share this home with a complete stranger or drive scores of miles away and try to find a room.

The movie is split into numerous acts, including a flashback, and even changes perspectives of leads.  With a very dark mystery of the house, as well as the unknown backgrounds of the lead characters, the film leaves a dread that makes one ponder where the story will go.  Dark Discussions takes a look at this very interesting film which includes Justin Long and Richard Brake in the cast and gives their thoughts.
