Platitudes are phrases that are widely used and regarded as a safe thing to say to someone who is hurting.

In reality, these phrases normally have the opposite effect. 

Listen to hear what fellow grievers have to say about platitudes, and how they made them feel.

Then, continue listening to hear words that were received as loving, caring and supportive.

This is not to make people for bad for the things they've said, as I don't believe people are trying to minimize grief. These are well known, commonly used phrases. Becca's story is about losing her mom to Alzheimer's. Although her mom is still alive, she hasn't been able to communicate for several years.

Her takeaway is that having a loved one with Alzheimer's is like getting on the wrong train and going somewhere you didn't want to go. But you just need to go for the journey and see where it takes you.

Lauren lost her mom just over a year ago to leukemia. She shares several things she's done to honor her mom, to help others and herself. 

Her takeaway is to know that your grief matters and to be gentle and kind to yourself. Allow yourself to feel the emotions that come with the loss of someone you love.

Alexia shares the story of losing her mom to cancer, and how they weren't allowed to talk about it after her mom died.

Alison lost her mom when she was 18, at the end of her senior year in high school. Alison shares the story of her mom's 12-year battle with breast cancer, and her own journey to self-identity and emotional awareness since then.

Alison's take-away: My grief journey has taught me that it's ok to talk to other people about how you are feeling, and that you don't have to do this alone.

Yvonne was told as a child that her mother wanted nothing to do with her. As she got older, she learned a different story.

Yvonne's take-away: My grief journey has helped me always be able to see a different perspective. I'm always looking for the other side of the story, and have a capacity for empathy larger than myself.
