Dr David Beaumont and I sat down, (via zoom) to discuss his book Positive Medicine - Disrupting the Future of Medical Practice. We chatted about his vision for the future of medical practice which he believes lies beyond the doctor-patient relationship and into a person-doctor partnership. David says "we should be able to choose what is best for our own health, not be swept along (or forgotten) by systems." He also shares how this vision can be achieved and the work he's doing, which is empowering people around their health and well-being. This is a great conversation!
Get cosy and join us in The Soul Full Lounge for a thought provoking conversation and make sure you stick around for a fantastic question which David encourages you to reflect on.
More about David:
Dr. Beaumont resides in Cromwell and works as a specialist doctor in the health of workers. He has assessed and advised thousands of people who have been ‘let down’ by healthcare systems and not returned to work, experiencing years or a lifetime of disability. From stories his clients have shared with him, and his own experience of ill health — including a heart attack, hip replacements and depression — he came to realise that there needs to be a shift in emphasis to preventative health. He is focused on seeing people in the context of their whole lives.
The Cromwell Experiment
Dr. David Beaumont is launching a 6-month project, putting into practice his theories from the book. His concepts and the logical reasoning for why a radical shift in healthcare delivery is needed will be tested in this project, ‘The Cromwell Experiment.’ ‘We are providing the opportunity for the community and the doctors and practice teams who serve that community to come together to demonstrate the value of a whole person approach to health,’ shares Dr. Beaumont. ‘In Cromwell, we have a discrete, engaged community of a size which is ideal to test the concept of a new model of health for the whole of Aotearoa New Zealand.’‘This is a project which engages with the community and medical services to collaborate in the co-design of a health and wellbeing programme which not only promotes health but at the same time aims to address the growing problem of doctor burnout, recruitment and retention of doctors in rural communities.’The intention of the Cromwell Experiment is ultimately is to enable a significant proportion of the population of Cromwell to go through the programme and to improve the health and wellbeing of the community.
