Small Changes Big Shifts

David Fryburg

You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe deserve your love and affection. - Buddha

David Fryburg, M.D., is a physician (internist and endocrinologist), a scientist, and a self-proclaimed nerd who wants to help people achieve a better and more meaningful life. He has been an academic journeyman educated and trained at a lot of great institutions.

Following a terrific experience as faculty at the University of Virginia, Dr. Fryburg moved to the pharmaceutical industry to eventually lead translational medicine for cardiovascular, metabolic, and endocrine diseases at Pfizer. For the last 9 years he has led teams of scientists from academia, government, and industry to solve problems in how we measure or diagnose disease for the Foundation for the NIH Biomarkers Consortium.

In 2014, with his son Jesse, David co-founded Envision Kindness, a novel non-profit that promotes kindness, compassion, joy, and love through images crowd sourced from around the world. As he dug deeper, the science behind why kindness is so important made itself known. It is through this blog that his alter ego, Prof K, shares these learnings and puts a scientific face on the ancient wisdom "it is better to give than receive."

Join Dr. Michelle and David Fryburg M.D. as they talk about:

  • What inspired him to co-found Envision Kindness to show the beauty of positive human interaction and relationships that he knows to be true.
  • The science of kindness and why it's so necessary for our survival as humans.
  • Why we are naturally built for kindness and how just witnessing it can uplift our wellbeing.
  • The fact that kindness is the default state of most living beings.
  • How we're wired for empathy and compassion.
  • Why we're more attracted to people who are generous and caring through acts such as volunteering.
  • How Envision Kindness is passively inspiring people to be more kind, compassionate, and loving.

Compassionate people are geniuses in the art of living, more necessary to the dignity, security, and joy of humanity than the discoverers of knowledge. - Albert Einstein
