Washington Head Coach Mike Hopkins has one eye firmly focused on Washington's next opponent, the Oregon Ducks, but he's also letting his mind wander just a little bit toward Saturday's game too. That's because it's Senior Night, and it's the time to honor those who have given so much to the school and program. Hopkins was asked not only about how the Huskies will honor their players on Senior Night, but also about the legacy of a one-year player like Terrell Brown.
Coach Hop was also asked about Daejon Davis and the next men up tasked with picking up the slack in his absence; Cole Bajema and P.J. Fuller. He was asked about the evolution of the zone from the one he brought with him from Syracuse five years ago to the 'match' zone that is a hybrid of man and zone with switching principles involved. And how does that evolution show itself on the recruiting trail? How does UW now recruit with defense in mind?
Hop was also asked about the development of freshman Jackson Grant and any attention he's currently paying to the number of former UW players doing their thing in the NBA right now.
Terrell Brown, Jr., Jamal Bey, and Mike Hopkins all spoke to the media after Washington's 77-66 loss to UCLA Monday night at Alaska Airlines Arena. Here's what they had to say about the game, where the momentum turned in the Bruins' favor, losing Daejon Davis, and what they can do with two games left on the schedule (Oregon and Oregon State) before they finish out their season with the Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas.
Emmitt Matthews, Jr., Terrell Brown, Jr., and Mike Hopkins spoke to the media after Washington's 78-70 win over Washington State Saturday afternoon at Alaska Airlines Arena. Below is the full press conference audio, as well as selected quotes from each.
It's a situation Mike Hopkins probably never thought he'd ever deal with, but he's now had to do it twice in the past two seasons. Because of COVID and how the pandemic has wreaked havoc with scheduling, the Washington Huskies had to play Arizona State in back-to-back games in Tempe last season, and now the Huskies will play their in-state rivals from Washington State twice in four days, starting Wednesday.
In speaking to the media today, Hopkins showered the Cougars with praise for how they play on both ends of the court, as well as positive takeaways from playing three top-15 teams in a week and what it's going to take for the Huskies to finish the season strong. And lastly, he was asked for his thoughts on Jim Boeheim and Mike Krzyzewski coaching against each other for the final time ever this season and if he had any thoughts about going back to Syracuse after Boeheim eventually retires.
It was a long process, but it all paid off on Sunday when the Husky women's basketball team, 0-10 on the season in conference play, got their first conference win of the season with a 74-69 win over Arizona State at Alaska Airlines Arena. It wasn't just a win to get first-year head coach Tina Langley her first conference win, it also was a way to get the seniors a win in their last home game.
Langley met with the media on Monday and talked about what it meant to get the first win, if there was only going to be one, to come on Senior Night and what players like Nancy Mulkey and Missy Petersen have meant to the program since she took over.
She also addressed freshman guard Jayda Noble playing the most minutes she's played all season and her contributions to the winning effort.
Finally, Langley looked ahead at the final two games of the season, road games against a rebuilding Cal squad which is 11-10 on the season, but just 2-8 in conference play, and a team on the other end of the spectrum, second-ranked Stanford, which is currently 23-3 overall and a perfect 14-0 in conference play.
The 2021/2022 basketball season has not gone the way Tina Langley had hoped when she took over the Husky women's basketball program last year. Instead of dwelling on her team's struggles, she's remaining focused on the process of becoming the best team possible and setting the team up for success in the future.
On Wednesday, Langley met with the media to talk about the progress the team has made even with the results on the floor (5-13) not being where they want them to be.
She also talked about Washington's two opponents this weekend -- Arizona and Arizona State -- and the problems they will give the Huskies, lauding their defensive schemes and how hard the play every week.
Langley also talked about what were some things that have been an adjustment coming to the Pac 12 from Conference USA and the adjustments she has had to make.
Mike Hopkins spoke with the media Monday ahead of Washington's road trip to USC and UCLA. The Huskies face off with the Trojans Thursday night with an 8:30 pm PT tip. Hopkins was asked about what he saw on tape from the Saturday loss to Arizona, the similarities between UA and USC, the idea of possibly not seeing Isaiah Mobley, who is dealing with a broken nose and didn't play Sunday in their win over UCLA, the status of Daejon Davis and Samuel Ariyibi, and more.
Terrell Brown, Jr., Nate Roberts, and Mike Hopkins all spoke post-game after the Huskies lost big to No. 4 Arizona, 92-68. Everything was working so well for the Huskies the first 10 minutes of the game as they built up a 14-point lead on the Wildcats.
But Arizona made adjustments, and Washington just couldn't counter their counters.
Terrell Brown, Jr., Nate Roberts, and Mike Hopkins spoke after the game about what went right early, what went wrong the rest of the way, and what next week holds for the Huskies as they travel to play the LA schools, starting with USC this coming Thursday night.
Washington Head Coach Mike Hopkins spoke with the media after Washington's 87-64 win over Arizona State. He talked about the status of Daejon Davis, the reason for putting P.J. Fuller in his place, on Cole Bajema's game, and the opportunity that lay ahead this weekend for UW as they host No. 4 Arizona.
Washington Head Coach Mike Hopkins spoke to the media Monday, and below are selected quotes, as well as full audio, ahead of UW's Thursday night game versus Arizona State.
The Huskies will likely be without Daejon Davis, hurt early in their loss at Stanford. Hopkins knows what Davis brings to the team but is confident others can step up as the Sun Devils and Arizona Wildcats come to Alaska Airlines Arena in the coming days.
