Today is day 2005 of my daily barefoot-style running streak. 20,050km covered. 20,025km still to go on a mission to run the circumference of the earth and raise £1M for children's causes including Great Ormond Street Hospital and BBC Children in Need.
In today's episode I reflect on something I built this morning that felt genuinely significant — a core framework for Operations Director that maps exactly what we do and the journey we take business owners through. I am calling it OPTIMISE, and each letter represents a stage: Objectives, Team, Process, Intelligence, Scoreboards, and Exit readiness.
What struck me today was how closely this mirrors what keeps a running streak alive. It is not motivation that gets you to day 2005. It is having a clear process that you follow regardless of what is happening around you. The same is true in business. Without a core process, you are relying on effort alone — and effort without structure eventually runs out.
If you run a small business and you cannot clearly explain the journey you take your clients through, this episode is worth your time. Not because I have all the answers, but because I am working through exactly the same questions in real time.
