  • Dirt Bag + Physics + Passion = Design

This week we sat down with Casey Shaw. Casey is an Innovation Designer in the Outdoor Industry. He was also the former manager of the Forge; Patagonia's R&D Department. Casey was born and lived in Canada through college, where he studied physics. His passion for the mountains took him out on the road climbing rock and ice for a good long time. His experiences in the field had him asking questions such as,"why do you use this equipment" or "why do you dress like this" or "wonder if we were to do it this way?" Casey is a soft-spoken design force in the outdoor industry; many of us today enjoy better clothing and equipment because of his talents.

  • Human Power, Jennifer Pharr Davis

This week we speak with Jennifer Pharr Davis:

"In 2011, Jennifer covered the 2,185-mile Appalachian Trail in forty-six days, eleven hours, and twenty minutes, maintaining a remarkable average of forty-seven miles per day.

By doing this, she claimed the overall (male or female) fastest known time on the “A.T.” and became the first woman to set the mark.

Jennifer has also backpacked over 700 miles in her 2nd and 3rd Trimesters of Pregnancy, walked across the state of North Carolina while nursing her son, and set foot on a trail in all 50 states with her daughter. As a mother, she has also overseen substantial growth within Blue Ridge Hiking Company and elevated her career as a Speaker and Author. As such, she is a strong proponent for women receiving the support they need to excel in the outdoors and workplace.

Jennifer has authored seven books, including her first book, "Becoming Odyssa," which has sold over 50,000 copies and her critcally acclaimed adventure narrative, "The Pursuit of Endurance." She has also written articles for the New York Times, Outside magazine, Backpacker, and Trail Runner, and has been featured in the Washington Post, the New York Times, the Daily Beast, NPR’s Talk of the Nation and the CBS Early Show.

Jennifer is a professional speaker who has shared her trail adventures with corporations, conferences, schools, and libraries across the country. She is the founder and owner of Blue Ridge Hiking Company, a guiding service that strives “to make the wilderness accessible and enjoyable” for hikers of all ages, genders, and ability levels. She is also a former board member for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and an ambassador for the American Hiking Society. Jennifer lives in Asheville, North Carolina, with her husband Brew and their daughter Charley and son Gus."

  • Shop Locally

This week we talk with Mike Massey, who is a third generation retailer, owner of Massey's Outfitters, and the founder of locally.com. Locally was founded in 2014 in anticipation of changes in consumer behavior. Mike states, "we saw that shoppers were increasingly turning to internet-connected devices for decision making and that increasingly nearby stores, the brands they carry, and their on-hand inventory were invisible to shoppers. So we built a solution. Today, we help thousands of stores present their selection to nearby shoppers using ecommerce tactics and we provide users with novel last-mile fulfillment options like in-store pickup and same-day delivery."

  • Behind the Lens

This week we talk with Andrew Kornylak, filmmaker and photographer. Andrew writes, "I was always into photography since I was a kid, and I come from a family of professional and amateur artists and photographers. From early on I was always into the outdoors and fascinated by adventure photographers of that time, especially those in National Geographic Magazine. Galen Rowell’s work really stood out, and there was a photographer that crossed genres, not only as a an adventure photographer but also doing in-depth stories.

I went to school at the University of Chicago, which is where I learned to rock climb. in 1996 I graduated with a degree in mathematics and worked as a software developer, first in Atlanta, then in Arizona, before quitting my desk job and making a go at adventure photography, with climbing and people living the fringe climber lifestyle as my main focus.

I ended up back in the South in 2003, and now I live in Chapel Hill, NC, with my wife and 3 kids.

Today I mainly shoot magazine stories and documentary film. Over the years I've worked for a wide variety of clients such as Garden & Gun, Apple, Hanes, Square, National Geographic Adventure, Backpacker, Climbing, & Rock & Ice. I am also the Photo Director for Outdoor Retailer and their two magazines, Outdoor Retailer Magazine and the OR Daily.

Though I shoot a lot more subject matter than just climbing these days, the outdoor and adventure world keeps me coming back, and informs all my work."
