Last week's focus was on the history behind the Community Choice Act, today's podcast addresses current activities. Just this last week, the Senate Finance Committee held a hearing on the Community Choice Act. It was great to see the Senate Finance Committee leaders, both Democrat and Republican speak in support of the Community Choice Act.

This legislation is not without its opposition. It has been 10 years since MiCASSA (now the Community Choice Act) was first introduced seeking the right of individuals with disabilities to live in their communities. In addition to looking at support for legislation it is just as important to be aware of what is preventing a bill from passage.

The State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is a national health insurance program to provide for the growing numbers of uninsured children, including children with disabilities.nnWith the rising costs of medical care, private insurance is becoming too expensive for many working and even middle-class families. This can put them in a tenuous situation if their employer does not offer health insurance. SCHIP acts like a safety-net providing health insurance to children whose families cannot afford it.

However, SCHIP's authorization runs out on September 30th of this year and unless it is reauthorized, the program will expire leaving states without the federal funds to support the program.

This past labor day weekend the Muscular Dystrophy Association's Annual Telethon took place.  The telethon raises funds for research into cures for Muscular Dystrophy, camps for children with these disabilities and adaptive equipment and wheelchairs.  This year, in response to the perceived negative images and sterotypes utilized for fundraising, disability bloggers are protesting the telethon.  Others express staunch support.  This episode explores some of the issues surrounding the creation of the public perception of disability through media fundraising tactics.

This episode also offers a legislative update on ADA Restoration legislation currently in Congress.
