  • The WKND: You Belong | Our Identity In Our Heavenly Father | Derrick Milner

Session 3 of The WKND 2025:

Associate Director of Students, Derrick Milner, begins by acknowledging the emotional impact of the week, highlighting stories of transformation and emphasizing that God's work is ongoing.

He then transitions to a personal anecdote about his changing perception of thunderstorms, using it as a metaphor for life's challenges. He recounts a childhood experience of fear during a storm, contrasting it with his current appreciation for their power and beauty. This leads into a discussion of a biblical story from John 4, where Jesus encounters a Samaritan woman at a well.

The speaker emphasizes the social context of the story, highlighting the woman's status as an outcast due to her gender, ethnicity, and past marital history. He stresses that Jesus's willingness to engage with her, despite societal norms, demonstrates his radical love and acceptance. Jesus offers her "living water," symbolizing spiritual fulfillment, and reveals his knowledge of her past, offering salvation before she confesses her sins.

The speaker draws parallels between the woman's experience and the struggles of the audience, addressing feelings of isolation, unworthiness, and shame. He contrasts the negative self-talk fueled by the "enemy" with the positive affirmations of God's love and acceptance, quoting biblical passages that affirm their identity as chosen, forgiven, and beloved.

He encourages the audience to reject the lies that lead to darkness and embrace the light of God's truth, reminding them that they are called to be beacons of hope to others. He concludes by urging those who feel lost or burdened to seek guidance from leaders, make a decision to follow Jesus, and embrace their identity as children of God.

  • The WKND: You Belong | Your Seat At The Father's Table | Derrick Milner

Session 2 of The WKND 2025:

Associate Director of Students, Derrick Milner, opens by acknowledging the students' tiredness and encourages them to stay awake, emphasizing the importance of seizing every opportunity to connect with God. He prays for God to speak to the students' hearts, especially those new to the church or the event.

Derrick then transitions to the core message: the feeling of inadequacy. He shares personal anecdotes about feeling unworthy, both in serious and lighthearted situations, illustrating how those feelings can take root. He then introduces the Parable of the Prodigal Son from Luke 15, recounting the story of a son who demands his inheritance, squanders it, and ultimately returns home in desperation.

Derrick draws parallels between the son's feelings of unworthiness and the students' own experiences, highlighting how societal pressures and personal failures can lead to feelings of hopelessness. He emphasizes the father's (representing God's) unconditional love and willingness to forgive, even when the son feels undeserving.

The sermon culminates in an invitation for students to examine their hearts and acknowledge their need for God's forgiveness. Stressing that God offers a seat at His table, not as servants, but as sons and daughters, regardless of past mistakes. He encourages students who feel lost or empty to seek a relationship with Jesus, offering guidance and support from church leaders. Closing with a call to worship, reinforcing the message that God's love and acceptance are available to all who seek Him.

  • The WKND: You Belong | Adopted By Grace | Brian Smith

Session 1 of The WKND 2025:

Student Pastor, Brian Smith, emphasizes that the fundamental questions people have about their purpose and value can only be answered through a relationship with God. He highlights the concept of sin as a barrier between humans and God, explaining that it's an inherited condition that separates people from their true purpose and identity.

The central message is that God offers a solution to this problem through Jesus Christ. The speaker stresses that Jesus's sacrifice on the cross is a gift of grace, allowing people to be forgiven and restored to a relationship with God. Once this gift is accepted, individuals can find their true identity and purpose.

The sermon focuses heavily on the idea of adoption, comparing it to the speaker's own experience adopting his daughter. He explains that through Jesus, believers are adopted into God's family, becoming his children. This adoption signifies a deep, permanent, and loving relationship with God as their "Abba," or father.

Brian reinforces that God sees believers as his "masterpieces," created with a specific purpose. He encourages students to reject the negative voices that tell them they are worthless or mistakes, and instead embrace their identity as children of God.

Brian concludes by urging students to reflect on whether they have truly accepted God's gift of grace. He encourages those who have to deepen their faith, and those who haven't to seek a relationship with God. He ends with a prayer and a song, reinforcing the message of God's love and the importance of belonging to his family.

  • Wednesday Night Worship | Real Mature: Growing In Favor With Others | Brian Smith

The continuation of "Real Mature" series, which explores Jesus's adolescence, specifically focusing on Luke 2:52, where Jesus grew in wisdom, stature, and favor with God and people. The previous sessions covered growing in favor with God and wisdom, highlighting the choice between righteous and wicked paths and the value of seeking wisdom through God's word and wise companionship.

This session focuses on growing in favor with others, emphasizing healthy relationships. The speaker outlines three practical steps based on Romans 12: taking the lead in honoring others, thinking carefully about one's actions, and striving for peace. Brian then elaborates on these points, urging the students to stop gossiping, be quick to listen and slow to speak and anger, and assume the best possible intentions in others. He uses personal anecdotes and biblical references to illustrate these principles, stressing their importance in building strong relationships. Concluding by encouraging the students to practice these principles throughout the week, promising that these seemingly simple actions will lead to profound positive outcomes in their lives.

  • Wednesday Night Worship | Real Mature: Choosing The Right Path | Brian Smith

Student Pastor Brian Smith begins by explaining a new series titled "Real Mature," referencing a phrase commonly used to admonish misbehavior.

He poses the question of what Jesus was like as a middle schooler, highlighting the limited information available but focusing on a specific story from Luke 2:41-52. This story recounts Jesus's parents' anxiety upon discovering his absence in Jerusalem, only to find him engaged in deep discussion with religious teachers.

Brian emphasizes that while Jesus was independent, he ultimately returned home and remained obedient to his parents. He then introduces the concept of "favor with God," likening it to the wind assisting a cyclist.

To illustrate this further, in Psalm 1, which presents two contrasting paths: the path of the righteous and the path of the wicked. The path of righteousness is characterized by delighting in God's word, meditating on it, and living a life that reflects God's will. Conversely, the path of the wicked involves walking in the advice of the wicked, standing in the pathway of sinners, and sitting in the company of mockers.

Brian explains that these paths are not single-time decisions but rather a series of choices. He uses the analogy of a trust fall to illustrate how seemingly minor distractions or attempts to control the situation can lead to failure. He emphasizes that the path chosen determines the health of one's "roots," influencing the fruit produced in their life.

Finally, Brian addresses the question of what to do when one finds themselves on the wrong path. He quotes C.S. Lewis, who emphasizes the importance of recognizing when one is on the wrong road and making the decision to turn back, even if it feels like going backwards.

The sermon concludes with an encouragement to consider which path is being chosen in every situation and to prioritize choices that bring one closer to God.

  • The Collective | Trust The Detour | Trish Johnson Bailey

Student Pastor, Brian Smith, and Associate Director of Students, Derrick Milner, interviews Trish Johnson Bailey, the wife of their close friend Flip, who recently passed away. Brian and Derrick explain that the evening's focus will be on Trish's experience with faith amidst deep suffering.

Trish shares her story of coming to faith later in life after a superficial early experience, and how her husband Flip, who had Crohn's disease since 16, helped solidify her faith. They married young and faced numerous health crises with Flip, eventually leading to a cancer diagnosis during the pandemic. Despite the devastating news, they chose to call it a "detour" and maintained their faith. Even with widespread prayer and worship, Flip's health declined after a family vacation, and he passed away.

Trish emphasizes that her faith survived because she continued to trust God, even amidst unanswered prayers and deep pain. She acknowledges the difficulty of her loss, particularly for her children, but reiterates that God is good, even when life is hard. She highlights the importance of authentic faith, including questioning God and expressing grief, while still maintaining trust. Trish shares how God has continued to work in her life after Flip's death, and that she initially tried to remain involved in the college ministry they led together.

  • Summer Camp 2024 | Claim Your Campus | Brian Smith

Brian Smith, Student Pastor, emphasizes the importance of carrying the camp experience beyond the final night. He urges students to rekindle their faith, as described in 2 Timothy 1:6-7, and to not let the camp experience be a fleeting moment. He stresses the power of individual action, citing examples like Andrew inviting Peter to meet Jesus and Ananias praying for Paul. Brian encourages students to "claim their campuses" by inviting others to encounter Jesus, using the Claim Your Campus app as a practical tool. He shares testimonies of students whose prayer groups positively impacted their schools. Finally, he encourages students to build "memorials" of their camp experience, like the Israelites did with stones from the Jordan River, to help them remember and continue living out their faith. He suggests writing, art, photography, or baptism as potential memorials, emphasizing the need to hold onto the camp experience and apply it to their lives back home.

  • Summer Camp 2024 | How Do We Hold On To Faith? | Derrick Milner

Derrick emphasize that faith isn't just about survival, but thriving, and that real faith produces endurance. Derrick uses the analogy of refining silver to illustrate how impurities in our lives need to be addressed so that we can reflect Jesus.
