    There's
no better way to close out a season than with a great call to action. To make a
better world, it takes action. Our guest today is Desh Amila. And we talk about
his fantastic documentaries. Now, more than ever, we need courageous men and
women to stand up. We need people to talk; we need communication. Our world can
feel like it's falling apart around us. But all it takes is for people to
educate themselves. With the great documentaries that Desh and his team put
together, they illustrate how important it really is to remember history. And
more important, how to challenge yourself to understand what is truth. Let's
not waste any more time and get into this great episode to finish off this
fabulous season. And I can't wait for next season. Let's get into this. To overcome, you must educate. Educate not
only yourself but educate anyone seeking to learn. We are all Dead America. We
can all learn something. To learn. We must challenge what we already
understand. The way we do that is through conversation. Sometimes we have
conversations with others. However, some of the best conversations happen with
ourselves. Reach Out and challenge yourself. Let's dive in and learn something
right now. Today we have Desh Amila with us. He is a documentary filmmaker, and
he is a passionate advocate for change. Desh, could you please introduce
yourself and let people know just a little bit about who you are and how you
got to where you are today.
    Desh Amila 03:47
    Thank
you for having me. I am, as you mentioned, a documentary filmmaker. I'm also an
entrepreneur, and I migrated to Beston, Australia. I migrated to Australia just
over 20 years ago from a country called Sri Lanka. Some of your listeners may
know the country. My journey has largely shaped me during my time in Sri Lanka,
which was 1981. My birth year was the beginning of a civil war. So I've only
known my country as a country of Civil War, which lasted 28 years. So I've
moved to Australia in about 2000. And since then, I have been involved in the
various number of things. My education was in filmmaking. But around 2010, I
started getting involved with intellectual events. So I've been running events
for a very long time, and I had the luxury of working with Some of the greatest
minds in the world. And it's always been my dream eventually to start making
films. In 2019, early 2019, late 2018, I released my first film, Islam and the
future of tolerance, featuring Sam Harris and Maajid Nawaz. And I have a new
movie called Better Left Unsaid, which is scheduled to come out in March this
    year.

    Understanding
the world that we live in, can be very exhausting. It can make our minds do
unthinkable things. Today's guest Dr. William Jackson incorporates
psychotherapy, positive psychology, and the most accessible core methods of
meditation into his practices, with 7000 plus hours of total time in retreat.
While a monk, he practiced with an organized retreat of Buddhist teachers
around the world, including His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. He's here today to
help us understand his contemporary evidence-based meditation practices. Let's

yourself. Let's dive in and learn something right now. Dr. Jackson, could you
please introduce yourself and let the audience know, just a little bit more
about you and how you got to where you are today? Sure. My name is William
Jackson, I I'm a health psychologist and a former Buddhist monk. And what that
sort of means is, as a health psychologist, I help often people who have both a
chronic illness and something that they're dealing with psychologically. And I
found that sort of niche for myself, after being a Buddhist monk and deciding I
was going to take the robes off, I wanted to find a way that I could utilize
what I had learned in meditation to help people. And it just so happens that
mindfulness has found a niche in the chronic pain community, and then sort of
expanded into the rest of the medical community from there. So that's what sort
of brought me into doing the work that I'm doing now. And, you know, I'm sure
we'll get into it a little bit later. But there's certain types of practices
and certain structures of courses and learning meditation that are more helpful
than others. And I've sort of veered in the direction of these more comprehensive
    meditation programs.
    Ed Watters
    04:10
    Right
off when I saw you on Poddit, I saw that you were a former Buddhist monk. Yes,
that just fascinates me. Could you walk us through? What made you become a
Buddhist monk? And then why would you decide to walk away from that lifestyle?
    Dr. William Jackson 04:30
    Sure.
Yeah. So before I became a monk, I was actually an actor. So I started in my
junior year of high school acting because I wasn't doing so good academically
in my public high school, and, you know, getting into a little bit of trouble
here and there. But I had one teacher who saw me do a bunch of impressions and
characters and he really encouraged me...

    Josh Cary
    03:06
    I
absolutely will. Thanks. By the way, Ed, for inviting me on Dead America. I'm
already a fan. I love it all. So long story short, today, I am, like you said I'm
the hidden entrepreneur. And that's because I spent 40 years hiding. I showed
up in every situation, hiding my true self, my true talent, and everything that
I was actually capable of achieving. I did that because I was so fearful of
rocking the boat, and I didn't want to come across like I was so capable and
powerful. Because then what might happen, you might retaliate if you felt a
little insecure about what you're capable of. Right? Because if I'm just
inadvertently doing my thing, coming up with something wonderful, powerful, you
know, quite quite great. Something certainly in my wheelhouse. It might make
you feel insecure. And if you retaliated, I felt growing up that I didn't have
the strength or ability to defend against that. So I just avoided it
altogether. Now what was so difficult was behind closed doors, what caused so
much angst, anger, depression, dare I say jealousy was because every moment of
every day I knew what I was capable of doing. So that that whole disconnect
just created this, this whole miserable person. Now cut to today, I'm the proud
    father. I have two adoring children, a seven-year old daughter, a five-year-old
son, who early on in their young lives. I realized that I see what's happening
here. I'm the child in this circle. I'm the one throwing the tantrum. And
they're looking at me like, you got to do something about that. And I made that
immediate case to do just that. And I knew that I didn't want to continue down that
path. Because if I did, and they grew up with that kind of father, how is that
going to wind up for them? Right? We know that outcome. So

Security is a major thing in our modern world. But how many of us truly
understand how to protect and dispose of our information properly? Our next
guest, Paul, is going to help us understand that just a little bit better. We
need to understand the technological world that we live in. And we need people
like Paul to help us figure out these data security issues and fill the void.
Let's not waste any time and get into this terrific interview with Paul

Katzoff with us. He is the CEO of White Canyon Software. Paul, let's start off
with letting people know who Paul Katzoff is. And how did you become the CEO of
    white Canyon software?
    Paul Katzoff
    03:03
Ed, pleasure to be here. Pleasure to be on Dead
America. Thank you for having me. First off, I've been the CEO of White Canyon
Software for three years. As far as my education goes, I have an undergraduate
from BYU Hawaii, and then also my MBA from Utah State. As far as it How did I
get to this position? I think it goes to a lot of work. But also, you know,
working for a small company, I have the right educational background, but also
successful in the sales area, the support area, you know, running different
teams, things like that. So when the opening came up, they offered it to me, and
like anyone else out there, I happily jumped at the chance.
    Ed Watters
    03:51
    Of
course, you know, it's unique, you started from the bottom, and you kind of
went up through the ranks. And that's a great way to learn the details of the
company. When you got out of college, I assume you didn't expect just to jump
    into a CEO role.
    Paul Katzoff
    04:14
    Right.
And I think sometimes in the MBA program, you kind of hope that happened to
you. And looking back, I think you realize just the amount of information you
have to learn post-college, you know, college is great. It gives you a great
framework. It gives you a great understanding of business. But when you get
into the real world and working day to day and how business happens between different
companies. It's a lot to pick up. So yeah, I started off at the bottom. There
was a little bit of humility to take a technical support role, but that was
    back in "08" February "08",
right after the big crash. So I was happy with anything. Took the technical
support role, and I decided to actually apply everything I learned in my MBA
program into that role, and what happened is I was successful; I was organized.
I saw the big picture. And I got offered the support manager role, probably
nine months later, a year later, and moved into that role. And then once again,
I can apply those principles I learned in the MBA program to that position. And
it was really fun to kind of see the real-world real world application come
into play to me; that's where the education so...

    Well,
first, I want to say thanks for having me. And it's super important to have
these platforms so that we can talk about the things that I think are the most
important that nobody talks about, or very few people talk about. So thank you

business and our personal lives, they're intertwined all the time. That's just
who we are as human beings, and there's no way to do that different. And the
reason that I got to this place is because I had a business that I sold a
couple of years ago that was very successful and had a lot of moving parts,
lots of clients, hundreds of clients, lots of employees. And my experience of
running that business was one of stress, anxiety, worry. I was constantly in

    Recently,
I had the unique opportunity to sit down and speak with Dr. Krishna Bhatta. Dr.
Bhatta is a surgeon, an inventor, an author, and so much more. But what we
talked about with Dr. Bhatta was a personal side of Dr. Bhatta. His willingness
to sit down and teach us all about what he's learned about the inner silence
and developing skills to calm yourself under any situation. It was a pleasure
to talk with Dr. Bhatta. Let's not waste any more time and get into this great
interview. To overcome, you must educate. Educate not only yourself but
educate anyone seeking to learn. We are all Dead America. We can all learn
something. To learn, we must challenge what we already understand. The way we
do that is through conversation. Sometimes we have conversations with others.
However, some of the best conversations happen with ourselves. Reach Out and
challenge yourself. Let's dive in and learn something right now. Today, we have
Dr. Krishna Bhatta with us. He is a surgeon, an author, and an inventor, a
fabulous person to talk with. Let's get right into it.

    Dr.
Bhatta, could you please introduce yourself and let our audience know what you
do and how you became who you are today?
    Dr. Krishna Bhatta 03:09
    Ed,
thanks for having me on your show. And it's a great pleasure to be beginning of
the new year. So a belated Happy New Year to you and to your audience. I'm a
urologist by profession. I've had a career in medicine and also parallel
meditation, which is not a career but for my personal growth. And now I'm
willing to share and I have started sharing with people my experience and my
    growth in that area.
    Dr. Krishna Bhatta 03:47
    Looking
into you, you have had a fascinating life. And you've experienced so much. What
we're going to talk a little bit about today is finding yourself through
intermittent silence, the power of inner theater, also some power of inner
conversation, which I really love. Could we start with intermittent silence and
let our audience know what exactly is intermittent silence?
    Dr. Krishna Bhatta 04:22
    Ed,
Let's start with two questions for the new year. One is, who controls what you
do? And the second one is do you understand that? That's good to hear. Many
people or many of us just do things but we don't know who is in control.
Sometimes it's our belief systems, sometimes it's our customs that we grow, and
sometimes it's just social norms that dictate what we do. So, getting the
control in your hands is more important for whatever you do. Even if it is a
glass of water or a cup of coffee, you are not doing it just because you have
done every day, you do it because you actively want that coffee. And it's in
your control we can say no to. And the second one is spending time with...

I'm on a mission to make the study of Latin mainstream--or at least a lot closer to the mainstream than it is now.
Latin is mostly absent from the curriculum at any level of our education system, but it ought to be brought back, especially in the early grades. The only place that Latin shows up in school is when Latin and Greek roots are covered, as a way of building vocabulary. But I can tell you that memorizing roots off a list is not the best way to get these extremely useful and productive words into a student’s head.
If you study Latin vocabulary in the context of Latin grammar—that is, if you study Latin—you go deep into English grammar, and this is something that isn’t really taught these days.
But you need grammar to make sense out of words. You have to put words together in a certain way, or they don’t mean what you want them to. Studying Latin heightens your awareness of how words work together to make meaning. In fact, studying Latin gives you a foundation that you can build all sorts of academic success on.
A person who has built a solid foundation in the basics of Latin in elementary school:
    * Will never think that a new word is too complicated to handle.
    * Will be able to read difficult texts in English (I'm talking especially about the classics) and absorb the author’s meaning.
    * Will understand the concept that languages have different ways of getting meaning across, which means that the Latin student will be able to enjoy later experiences with foreign languages in high school or college or life.
    * And perhaps most confidence-building of all, will be able to recognize when it is the speaker or the writer that is at fault and not their ability to understand.
I've identified three different groups to reach out to first: people who for some reason or other have always wanted to learn Latin, parents who are not too happy with the education their child is receiving in public school, and people who already studied Latin but didn't get on top of the material the first time around and want a chance to really understand it.
I have three free reports (corresponding to these three groups), and I'd be happy to share any or all of them with you. They go deeper into why Latin is worth studying. The titles are:

    challenging
ourselves. That's what Dead America is truly about. On today's episode, we do
just that. We dive deep into learning. And we talk to an individual that wants
to promote learning Latin. Latin is something that most of us don't even think
about. But you know, when it boils down to it, Latin has a lot to do...
